In 1486 Maleus Maleficarum was written which outlined the rules and definition for witchcraft cases. Tituba, a slave,  possessed eight girls from witchcraft; she stood trial and on the stand she  confessed to being a witch but also stated she saw nine names in the devil's book which opened the flood gates to further accusations due to paranoia.What fueled these court cases was the fact that spectral evidence was admissible which made a person guilty without reliable evidence.  The most logical event that occurred during these times is when Gov. Phipps stated there will be no more spector evidence allowed, which allowed, 49 of the 52 remaining accused of witchcraft to be released.
