A key job of Marketing is to understand the marketplace from the perspective of the customer looking back towards the company and helping lead the company where it should be in the future. Marketing’s job is to direct the organization toward the segments, or groups of customers and channels where the company can profitably compete. It should help the organization see how it needs to modify its product offerings, pricing, and communication so that it meets the needs of the distribution channel or end customers. (This is a function of your market positioning strategy.)

Marketing also needs to convert the market understanding into tools and tactics to attract the market, build (often digital) relationships, and develop leads. WIthout Sales, Marketing efforts run short. Marketing directs Sales as to where they should be hunting and what ammo to use. Note, however, that if Marketing becomes a sales support function focused only on the now, the future can become lost.
https://www.chiefoutsiders.com/blog/bid/97817/what-s-the-difference-between-sales-and-marketing

Marketing plays an important role in establishing relationships between customers and the organisations offering to the market. It gives us the confidence to want to try a new product in the market as opposed to situations where the products enter the market without publicity. This makes the marketing function critical in every organisation irrespective of whether the organisation is a profit or non-profit centred. Marketing shapes the image of the organisation, how people associate the organisations products or services and indeed give people the confidence about their products or services.

The marketing function is also tasked with branding of the organisation, participation in publicity activities, advertising and customer interaction through feedback collection. Every product launch starts with marketing and an end with marketing where by the department establishes the needs of the consumers and after introducing the product, the department seeks to identify whether the customer’s needs were met.

Marketing is a corporate activity that analyses the market to meet the needs of customers/users, defines the products and services that they want to sell, informs consumers, develops prices, organises sales, and influences customers. Also, marketing is not only about products and services, but also about raising, accepting and promoting any idea, or even a person. Marketing can thus extend to non-profit areas such as education, culture, religion or politics.
https://www.thebalancesmb.com/marketing-in-business-2948349
