We first saw racism in 1619 when twenty Africans were brought to the English colony of Jamestown, Virginia, where they was made to work for the English people. This then turned into something called the slave trade. We also saw racsim happen when Hitler was the leader of Germany in 1933, Hitler spread his beliefs in racial purity and in the superiority of the Germanic race what he called an Aryan master race. He pronounced that his race must remain pure in order to one day take over the world. For Hitler, the ideal Aryan was blond, blue eyed, and tall.

Racism In Sport and effects

To this current day we still see racism and a major place we see this is in sport. We see decisions and abuse happen because of an athletes ethnicty. Last year the professional footballer Kalidou Koulibaly who plays for Senegal national team was ignored by the referee when he request to stop the game after Kalidou Koulibaly was reportedly subjected to monkey chants throughout their 1-0 defeat to internazionale on Boxing Day. This is an example of a short term effect of racism in sport short term effects has players get angry and are forced not to play and could snap at another players, this could cause games to be called off or postponed or player not allowed to play for a bit. The long term effects of racism in sport could cause teams only to have one culture in each team, for example only white teams could only play against white teams, blacks only against blacks and asian only play against asians. This then means we would no longer play sports world wide. Things like the olympics would be canceled as they couldn't mix cultures together, and as soon as it stops sports being multicultural racism in towns, cities and country's will become worse and almost impossible to fix.
Racism in sports also effects powerful influences on a person’s perception, this includes sports coaches and mangers. For example, certain roles may be allocated depending on racial stereotypes. Athletes are assigned to certain playing positions by the coach based on the supposed racial attributes such as power and speed rather than actual achieved performance. The FA introduced the Rooney Rule at the start of the year 2018. This rule
dictates that sporting authorities must interview a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic applicant when recruiting for senior coaching positions. The rule has now been noticed and has been adopted across a number of other industries.

Media Treatment

Media creates a cover or a protective bubble for people to hide behind, it allows people to voice their racist opinion about athletes and events and avoid any sort of punishment for it. Raheem Sterling raises some very valid points that the media need to listen to. If he feels he is being targeted by the media, as a whole, for his race, it needs to be looked at.
When an innocdent occurs and appears in the media, nine times out of ten the persons colour or religion will be mentioned specially in the title where print is large which grabs attention and creates even more hate for set religons and cultures. Terms like 'Black man' and 'muslim' we see often in headlines linked to a negative event thats happened. This then creates a persona that all black men and all muslims are bad when really that is not the case at all. By the media creating this idea it makes life harder for ethnic people like getting a job, more often accused of crime and to walk the streets. Linking it back to the case study, media would rather focus on certain things that occur in the game rather then the over all game. The way the writer creates an article about the racist remarks at sterling rather then the Man City's loss to Chelsea supports my point.
In regards of the media fuelling racism i believe this is 100% true and stand by Raheem Sterling. Raheem has frequently found himself at the centre of attention throughout his career. Before this problem there was his tattoo of a rifle on his leg earlier this year. Where the media saw a gun on a black, Jamaican, young mans leg and automatically saw the negative which articles was wrote and made the public think the worst like gang member?
This shows that the media influences us the readers thoughts and makes us think the worst. When really this tattoo was totally innocent and had a deeper meaning close to the Sterling family.

Benefits of Stars speaking Out

Stars speaking up about racism and sharing their experiences makes everyone aware that racism still happens, because i believe a lot of people in the world are not aware that racism still exists. I think the way Raheem Sterling approached this issue was a good way because we see stars going to the news about racism but to help stop racism we need to show children and youths that it's not right has they are the future. Social media is a big part of children and teenagers life and not many will watch the news however will be on social media almost everyday and by Raheem posting this problem on Instagram more young people are going to see this and recognise. It also in this case inspires young black people wanting to become athletes to push and prove peoples perceptions wrong. A great example of this is the black american swimmer Simone Manuel who became the first black female swimmer to win an Olympic gold. She said
"This medal is not just for me, it's for some of the African-Americans who have been before me and been inspirations," she said.

"I hope I can be an inspiration for others. This medal is for the people who come behind me and get into the sport." there was also a tweet that was really quiet brutal but really honest which stated "This is for all the black kids who got kicked out of pools and for all the pools drained because black kids touched the water"- Simone Manuel This is such a powerful message for black children out there to go break down perceptions that have been built through the years like in this case 'black people can't swim.'

What should the media do to really help tackle racism?

In Football, if any racist chants is heard they will be kicked out of the ground all fans have to do is keep quiet but that doesn't mean racism is getting any better. As people still think and it only takes confrontation for people to show their true colours. Before we are a member of sport we are a member of society. Media can play a big role in help preventing racism, but before the media can change anything the people and society behind the media, thats both the writers and the auidence has to change. The perception of the average black man in the street has to be changed. We see black athletes, singer and actors trying to change the views of a black man and stop racism. has unfortunately this does change peoples views on average black man in day to day life. This to me is only treating the symptoms when ethnic stars speak up about racism when ideally we need to change the course.
The media and society throughout many years have ensured us that the hegemonic social group are more worthy then others. This group is white, middle class, middle aged, able body mend this group. People only see perceptions of set groups capability therefore society needs to start accepting other groups and change perception as these perceptions are fuelled by the media. In my opinion media needs to stop using ethnic terms or the colour of person in headlines or if they want to contain doing this use terms like 'white' or 'British' and treat everyone as an equal.
