Based on the excepts read in class, we have observed that in two of the short stories, characters including Millicent, from “The Initiation” and Hayley, from “Dont Pass me By” both have prioritized happiness and compromised their friendships and individuality for the goal of being included into the respective “inner circles” of their stories. We see Millicent essentially abandons her friend to join the sorority that she so wanted to be included in, oblivious to how this made her friend feel. Hayley also rejected her “Indian side” to fit in as she felt that being accepted was more important than those who care about her.

In Initiation by Slyvia Plath, she goes in depth on the problem that people will and can give up their individual happiness to fit into a society. In the short story the character Millicent gets invited into an initiation from the sorority in her high school and she has to go through this process which degrades her. “It was degrading, like being given a number.” She had a great friend in Tracy but she might leave her friend to fit in with the rest of the girls in the sorority.

She demonstrates this by showing us that the pursuit of her own comfort and security is important, but in following this path she would sacrifice her own happiness and would not be content with being herself in the constructing social box that she placed herself in. In breaking free from this, she would find ways to navigate life as herself.
