After having won many impactful battles against the Union, Robert E. Lee had an offensive mindset in the third year of the war. Lee disobeyed the opinions of others to take action in stopping the Union before they advanced any further but instead he went North to try to win more battles and gain the attention of the Europeans. Lee started to move North and Hooker, leader of Potomac Union army prepared for his arrival. When complications between the two forces began, Hooker resigned and was replaced by George Meade.

Both Lee and Meade, the new leader of the Union, were both making moves in plans of the next big battle. Lee moved his troops forwards to show confidence and assertion while Meade played it more strategically and prepared for Lee's move. It all started on July 1, 1863 and that battle ended with over 15,000 casualties between the two. The very next day another major battle occurred with the Union standing it's ground and not letting the confederate army advance. This battle ended with 16,000 dead or wounded in total. The next day, George Pickett made plans and led a very historic charge known as Pickett's Charge. It was not successful and added to the 10,000 casualties for the Confederate Army that day. In the end, they both lost in terms of lives with the Confederate losing about 28,000 men in this three day battle alone and the Union also took a 23,000 soldier count off. The Confederates are seen to have taken a bigger toll because this went down in history as the turning point of the Civil War and definitely discouraged any European support for Lee's army.
