During EL’s Skills Block instruction, students receive explicit, systematic, and cumulative phonics instruction that targets learning one spelling-sound pattern at a time, and comprehensively covers all spelling-sound patterns by the end of second grade. In our decodable readers, the words in the text are restricted to the spelling-sound patterns and high-frequency words that have already been taught.
