Children are curious by nature. As you grow up, and specially if you have been inmersed in a traditional education, people stops being curious and just consume information that in most cases they assume right. Inquiry based learning forces students to make questions and motivates them to find answers. Sometimes, as teachers, we forget the struggles of the students doing this tasks (which will have a key role in their learning). By experiencing those struggles we anticipate those of our students, and optimize the learning opportunities in the classroom.

We are becoming less and less creative and happy to be copy cats. Experiencing inquiry will help us as adults re-discover how stimulating it is to us humans to learn through doing, questioning, testing and investigating in order to formulate answers to our questions rather than finding ready-made ones. Let's stop trying to be our students' 'google' (which we can never be anyway). :)

       What is Inquiry teaching? Inquiry teaching is allowing students’ questions and curiosities to drive curriculum. Inquiry begins with gathering information through applying the human senses — seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. Inquiry encourages children to question, conduct research for genuine reasons, and make discoveries on their own. The practice transforms the teacher into a learner with students, and students become teachers with us. In an inquiry-based classroom, students aren't waiting for the teacher or someone else to provide an answer — instead, they are actively seeking solutions, designing investigations, and asking new questions.

Angela Dell'Olio Italy

Confucius said: "Tell me and forget, show me and remember, involve me and I understand", we can say that the last part of this statement is the essence of inquiry-based learning. Inquiry implies involvement that leads to understanding. In addition, engaging in learning involves having skills and attitudes that allow you to seek resolutions to issues and problems as you build new knowledge.
Through the process of inquiry, individuals construct much of their understanding of the natural and human worlds. The inquiry implies a "need or want to know" premise. The inquiry does not seek so much the right answer - because it often does not exist - but rather seeks appropriate resolutions to questions and problems. For educators, the survey implies an emphasis on the development of inquiry skills and the creation of thoughtful attitudes or thinking habits that will allow individuals to continue the pursuit of knowledge throughout life.
That is why, in my perspective, Inquiry Based Learning is so important in the learning process of our students and takes into account what is defined in the Student Profile of the 21st century.

Experience inquiry-based science education was awesome. I recognized, that I am not very open-minded, because during the arrangement of the hypotheses I was only thinking like a biologist. So I asked my sister what she is thinking and she told me some very good possibilities. When we get the extra information I recognized that a mix of all three hypothesis is possible. Put the theory into practice by myself was also very exciting. I think if the pupils learn in this way it will be more effective to them than only learning in a traditional way. Traditional way means that teachers told them information and they learn it for the exams. And it is also very important to experience inquiry learning for teachers, so that we can understand the learning process of our pupils in a much better way.

As adults, we already have many learned or acquired experiences. We are ready to give an explanation on the substance of these experiences. This is common to us because it has been confirmed in practice. Children do not have experience and we often mean they have. It is therefore important to remember the way in which we have gained experience ourselves.

Scientific researches favor students:
·         formation of independent thinking, that is in a new situation the ability to independently see and raise the problem, consider it systematically, put forward own hypotheses, substantiate them and offer an effective solution;
·         development of the ability to separate problems into constituents and to establish interrelationships between them for generalization;
·         formation of skills and abilities of a research experiment, that is, formulating the experiment's task, the nomination of a working hypothesis based on experimental facts and theory, development of a research method and do the experiment, systematization of the received data, analysis and generalization results of the experiment, the conclusion about the reliability of the confirmation or refutation of the working hypothesis;
· education of positive motives of research activity.

What’s “Why”?

I think it’s important to experience inquiry as an adult learner:
-          To raise motivation and interesting  in all players of knowledge (teacher and students together);
-          To put in real relationship students and teacher to discovery new solutions into a problem;
-          To make student an active investigator and “builder of new knowledge” and the teacher an adult learner;
-          To work together and to know a collaborative learning methodology;
-          To put out some mistake about a situation and to compare these ideas with the real situation;
-          To include every student who can make a “why”, linking this “why” with his life and underground;
-          To care to take time to experience and to take data answering himself inquiries;
-          To be creative and to have divergent opinion about an problem;
-          To know students and to plan according to what they need;
- To connect what I need student to learn and what they want to learn

Besides, without inquiry we would still be jumping from tree to tree, living in caves or unabled to write. It's inquiry that makes the world thrive and, less globally, a person succeed.

There are things you learn though the process of inquiry about how information is explored and processed.

       What
        What is Inquiry teaching? Inquiry teaching is allowing students’ questions and curiosities to drive curriculum. Inquiry begins with gathering information through applying the human senses — seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. Inquiry encourages children to question, conduct research for genuine reasons, and make discoveries on their own. The practice transforms the teacher into a learner with students, and students become teachers with us. In an inquiry-based classroom, students aren't waiting for the teacher or someone else to provide an answer — instead, they are actively seeking solutions, designing investigations, and asking new questions.

In my opinion, in adults case, inquiry based learning is important because:
a) being an active strategy, trains several receptors and allows both the capitalization of the previous experience and its enrichment through observations done
b) allows the development of some skills for personal development
c) as a teacher, the practice of this method is a prerequisite for successfully approaching it with students in the classroom.

At this fast-paced day and age we tend to cut corners and 'google' everything to find ready-made solutions for all the problems we encounter at home, family school, work etc. We are afraid to try new ways and afraid of making mistakes. :)

I think, inquiry-based learning is important, because:
- adult students, like children, can ask for everything, try everything,
- stimulates and satisfies curiosity,
- awakens a positive attitude to learning,
- develops critical thinking,
- develops key competences, for example: ability to solve problems, better cooperation and communication in a group
- students have fun, are happy with the lesson, positive attitude,
- students remember more,
- they can apply experiments in everyday life.

Inquiry keeps our inner child - that is also our inner scientist - alive. Adult life is too often based on procedures and too little on discovery. As teachers, we need to keep the flame of our inquiry alive, so that we can pass it on to our students. Most of all, we have to be careful not to put down our students' curiosity, which is something that happens quite often during school years!

Personally, I am a firm believer in providing inquiry activities to students. This belief is reaffirmed by the experience of wonder I myself go through when participating in an inquiry activity. Recently I participated in an inquiry activity regarding Pythagoras theorem whereby students (and in this case, me too) come to a conscious realization about the derivation of the formula. I was so impressed and having understood the derivation of formula the whole concept made more sense. I am sure students had a more meaningful learning experience than just being delivered the formula and asked to remember it. I am also currently working a leader in my school for a CPD programme to promote the use of IBL in Maths and Science. As a starter activity I decided to present the teachers (from a Maths and Phsyics background) with the opportunity to decide whether objects where living, non-living or never alive and what criteria they were using to make this selection. They could not come to an agreement about a humanoid robot and fire and their thought process through discussion was really interesting! This activity helped them realize the potential inquiry has to result in a meaningful learning experience. Therefore, I am of the opinion that if we as teachers and adults do not experience inquiry learning then, we are less likely to believe in its power and potential and ultimately less likely to provide such activities to our students.

With science reform under way, we have an opportunityto transform science classrooms into educational environmentsthat buzz with active learners engaged ininquiry. Fortunately, science teachers have many strategiesand techniques to guide student thinking and findingout, such as questions, discrepant events, process skills,inductive and deductive activities, information gathering,and problem solving. Using combinations of thesepedagogical tools can make teaching and learning scienceexciting for teachers as well as students. Furthermore,inquiry-based instruction will help students constructfundamental science concepts that will help thembetter understand themselves and the world around them.

"The use of the method of scientific research in teaching and learning sciences contributes to the development of understanding, to the participation and interest of students in scientific activities, and to the improvement of education in general. By participating in scientific research activities, students acquire a general understanding of the important ideas that science promotes, a purpose in which scientific research is carried out, and an evaluation and interpretation of results, all of which are educational outcomes that are important to all citizens, not only for those who will choose occupations in the sciences, in adult life. "

"Essential Features of Research Education Based on Investigation:

Students assume a conception to understand the scientific aspects of the world around them through their own thinking, using logical and critical reasoning about the evidence they have gathered. Students will be involved in:
• direct use of objects and materials and phenomena observation;
• selecting useful information from a range of information, including books, the internet, teachers or scientists;
• formulating the questions for carrying out the scientific investigation, formulating the hypothesis, planning and conducting the investigation, solving the problems, verifying the hypotheses, reflecting the obtained results and developing new assumptions.
• collaborating with colleagues, sharing ideas, plans and conclusions, thus revealing the understanding of their own things and phenomena through dialogue.
Teachers will lead students to develop the necessary skills to carry out scientific research and to understand scientific concepts through their own work. This requires teachers to facilitate teamwork, argumentation, dialogue and debates as well as to enable students to be involved in experimental activities and to have access to information. "

Inquiry is important because it allows you to actively engage in the task at hand. You have to try and solve a given problem by choosing a path. We as adults commit to being life long learners, so we have to constantly reflect and look for ways to grow. Inquiry allows us to apply our learning.
