Along with creating the first ever maps and names of rivers and mountains while making their journey in also hopes of finding a Northwest passage which they were unsuccessful at, and sucha passage was not created until 1914. The Louisiana purchase encouraged settlers to move out west, and leave the now very populated states in search of land and wealth.
