         <description><![CDATA[<div><br></div><ul><li>Banquo is suspicious that Macbeth has killed Duncan. Macbeth orders Banquo and his son, Fleance to be murdered. </li><li>Macbeth describes Banquo as "our chief guest"- Macbeth flatters Banquo which gives him a false sense of security. He uses this as a means of finding out where he can have Banquo killed later in the evening. </li><li>That are having a royal Banquet </li><li>"Rather than so, come fate into the list. And champion me to the utterance'" - Macbeth is essentially saying that he is going to challenge fate. </li><li>Contrast from Act 1 to scene 3- in Act 1, Macbeth deeply considered whether murdering Duncan was the right thing to do and his inner conscience constantly challenged the decision. Conversely, in Act 3, Macbeth makes a quick decision to murder Banquo- this shows how ruthless he has become as the play progressed</li></ul><div><br><strong><em>Scene 2:</em></strong></div><ul><li>Macbeth suffers from nightmares- 'sleep In the affliction of these terrible dreams- this is similar to earlier in the play. It could show that Macbeth is regretful for his deeds or his inner voice is trying to tell him what is he doing is morally incorrect. </li><li>Macbeth talks about 'Duncan in his grave' with further references to sleep.</li><li>Animal references towards the end of the scene- 'shard-borne beetle' and 'the crow makes wings to the rocky wood'-  unpleasant animal imagery...</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

The murderers succeed... partially. Fleance escapes, while Banquo dies.<br>Macbeth's orders were for Banquo and Fleance to be killed - in a bid to nullify the prophecy regarding Banquo (Banquo's descendants shall be kings). This prophecy is feared by Macbeth, who would obviously want to maintain his throne.<br><br>Some major themes in this scene are: PROPHECY (Banquo's prophecy is very relevant); MURDER (Banquo and Fleance are to be murdered); BETRAYAL (Macbeth and Banquo were presumably best friends, however Macbeth has had Banquo killed).<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lennox and a Lord show their distrust in Macbeth. This reflects the possible feelings of others in Scotland as well, and foreshadows the downfall of Macbeth.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Macbeth recites a long soliloquy, and decides to “go no further with this business” of regicide. However, Lady Macbeth questions his masculinity and uses her feminine qualities to persuade him to be ambitious and carry out the deed. This is interesting because Lady Macbeth is defying the typical gender roles of the time and playing a more dominant figure in the relationship - challenging the man’s traditional role of authority.</div>]]></description>
