The goal of this project is to use form to convey meaning/content. Think about how LINE, FORM, SHAPE, and COLOR can all have an influence on the emotional qualities of a word. How can one best get to the essence of a word, and express that through typography?

Instructions: Make "graphics" using a word of choice. 

Select a word and explore it's expressive qualities through the manipulation of the letter forms. See if you can turn the type into a graphic that expresses the meaning of the word. 

You may use the media that is most relevant to you, hand-drawn ONLY PLEASE.

The word “breathe” to me means to let go, relax, calm down, exhale + inhale, wind, air, etc. So I decided to give the word an airy look as if it’s there but not really there and give it a bigger to smaller effect but in a wavy way to emphasize how it makes one feel. I also made it the color blue because it connects with wind and air.

SHARP: Bold, jagged letters with triangle accents mimic the look of blades or shards, creating a striking, edgy, and aggressive visual.

I adore my lego set flowers so once I saw the sunflowers I immediately knew that it'd be the one to pick.

I compared this artwork to a photo of my two friends on the New York City subway on our December trip last winter. As soon as i saw the piece Love on the Bus i immediately thought of this picture i took of them.

Exercise #3: Alternative Material Portraits & Mark-Making

For this exercise, I drew a goose I saw while waiting at the bus station, using only non-traditional materials I had with me. I used black and brown eyeshadow for the darker areas of the feathers and added white eyeshadow mixed with eczema cream and sunscreen to create the highlights around the eyes and neck. I first lightly sketched the bottom half of the goose with pencil for structure, but the top half was done entirely with makeup, letting the materials guide the look. The process reminded me of how much I used to love drawing as a kid and how natural creativity can come out in unexpected ways. It felt freeing, almost spiritual, as if I was tapping into a God-given gift that I’d forgotten about. Creating this goose wasn’t just about copying what I saw it was about rediscovering the joy of making marks that feel true to me.
