In 1974, Carol Ann Duffy commenced her pursuit of a philosophy degree at the University of Liverpool, completing her studies with distinction in 1977. It wasn't until six years later that she achieved recognition by winning the National Poetry Competition for her work titled "Whoever She Was," along with securing the top spot in the Greenwich Poetry Competition with "Words of Absolution." In the subsequent year, she embarked on her career as a poetry critic at The Guardian. Her tenure there lasted only a year before she transitioned to the role of editor at Ambit magazine (Green). After releasing three poetry compilations - "Fleshweathercock and Other Poems" (Outposts, 1974), a pamphlet titled "Beauty and the Beast" in collaboration with Adrian Henri (1977), and "Fifth Last Song" (Headland, 1982), Carol Ann Duffy's prominence soared when she secured victory in the National Poetry Competition in 1983. The subsequent year, she further solidified her reputation by clinching an Eric Gregory Award ("Carol Ann Duffy"). She moved from London to Manchester in 1996 and began to lecture in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University (O'Reilly).
