3-I'll be blunt, I am learning that what I feared is true for me- I don't care for online classes, I have too many questions, lol. I miss meeting my class :( I am confused about writing a lesson and in what format. I am excited to learn more about the common core standards and how I will be using them.
2- What is the IDP template and where it is provided? Is there somewhere where we can learn more about the 8 practices (besides corestandards.org)? I am wondering more about how to incorporate them into the lesson and the standards to align it to. Ok, sorry I have 3 questions, also- so can you clarify if our presentation has to be 30 min or 15-25 slides? That was unclear, as in, does it need a time requirement?
1- Our memories of math as kids really resonated off the same page, I thought. Seems like we had a commonality in that.

3 learnings- I have learned more about the math standards from researching online, the best practices in our textbook on how to teach math and more about my classmates in their reflections about math and something interesting about them.
2- Questions I have is what is the IDP template, I have not had a lesson planning class with Cardinal Stritch yet so I am very confused and have no idea where to start or what you expect?? Next is how long exactly our presentation time limit is exactly?
1-Realizing that you have to plan a lot more procedures and policies for class if you want your parents to really understand what is going on in your classroom. Also to ensure that you are making the best possible us of your time.

3 Learnings:
* I have learned that the common core state standards provide specific practices that state what students should be able to do in mathematics at the end of each grade level. However, there isn't a discussion of the underlying processes needed to understand and teach these mathematical concepts. However, my understanding is that the NCTM explains the cognitive processes that underly the understanding of mathematical concepts.
*I have also learned that the common core does not provide a progression of teaching math concepts, which is what I suspected. However, NCTM does.
*Therefore, my final understanding is that we use the CCSS to find specific concrete benchmarks for what students should be able to do in math, and then we use the NCTM processes to teach students what is needed to achieve the standards in a logical progression.
*We also teach with the 8 practices of teaching mathematics which underlies the CCSS and helps students to achieve them.
2 Questions:
*Planning large units in mathematics. What exactly is the progression for teaching math? Where do I find this?
*Are there templates or guides anywhere to math policies and unit planning in math... I always feel as if I am making everything up. And perhaps that is my love of structure and always having the right answer...but for me to teach in the fall...I need to figure some of this stuff out...
1 aha:
*The math talks video :) It was awesome and I was so glad that the teacher had the students share their thinking about how they got to their answer and then wrote it on the board. It helped students to see that there are many ways to solve a problem and also showed the students how other students in their class think! It also validated students and helped them to see their thinking as important enough to be put on the board and listened to!

Since math education has changed so much in the last ten years with the adaptation of common core, can we be sure it will not change again in the next decade? How should we address parents who are unsure of this "new math?"

- Are there any viable parts of the math education we received a decade ago? Which parts - if any- are still acceptable practices in the classroom today?

1 ah-ha:
Math classes and math instruction has changed tenfold since I was in high school, only a decade ago.

3 Learnings:
- The increase in math education dramatically changed during/after the Cold War because the US felt the need for math education compared to the global community.
- I learned about the 8 best practices for teaching math.
- I learned to always allow students time to process problems and thinking time. I was really anxious watching the teacher just wait for 2 minutes in silence during the Number Talk video. It was valuable to me to watch and take note on how this process works and is a best practice for our students.

2 Questions:
- How can I best use the standards to fit the curriculum my district will use?
- Do you want us to complete a full IDP for the lesson? Or a shortened version?

1 ah-ha:
- The importance of communication and notification of parents on how math is taught now. Math curriculum and best practices have changed since I've been in school and parents will be just as confused and anxious about what's happening regarding their students learning and math education.

Hi Everyone!!!! Great Take-aways and learning across the board. Thank you for your thoughts. I have summed up some thoughts below based on your questions.

You are right, this class and concepts of math are crucial for teaching, and I wish we had more time together than 4 classes, but remember you are just dipping your toe into content right now.

1. For Lesson Plan- don't fret!!! Do the best you can! Its all practice and we are all learning, I am not expecting perfection, I am expecting effort, which I can tell you all put in a ton!! You may pull resources from the internet, from anything I have provided, or anywhere else you have found or have used resources.

2. Unit Planning: Great Questions!!!! Often times, schools will either, develop a scope and sequence and provide their template, or provide a curriculum to use. If the schools curriculum does not align to standards, then it is your job to advocate!!! Express your concerns, maybe share other options, and if that doesn't work, than supplement!

3. For the Presentations they are typically done in person, since they are not, I thought about 15 slides would be comparable to that amount of time required to share all of the information required. Send me questions and your presentations for feedback before submitted if needed!!!

4. I pose this question back to the group: What strategies and skills did we teach 10 years ago that are still viable for todays math instruction? Reflect....

Studying the 8 practices made me understand how wonderfully structured math can be, but yet have the room for creativity in how we accomplish teaching each of the 8! Meaningful struggle is key at times to allow kids to develop problem solving skills-- being patient as a teacher is key!
Questions:
1) Resources for helping us develop the most up-to-date teaching strategies?
2) How important is self-reflection about how we were taught/what struggles we had in developing our teaching techniques?
My ah-ha is that I believe holding an info night for teaching parents how to tutor and giving them needed resources will go a long way in helping me to teach math effectively!
