Hello, Old Sport by Selim Hong

The Great Gatsby is a great example of a modern film depicting the elements of the tragic story as outlined by A.C Bradley. Blinded by his idea of love, Gatsby's story draws out the immense sense of tragic "waste".

That moment when reality hit Gatsby

This was the moment when Tom Buchanan mocked him for not being equal as them. Gatsby was already frustrated enough at this moment, because everything seemed to be falling apart, little by little. First, his identity and origin were questioned; second, he could not draw out the answer he wanted to hear from Daisy. He wanted her to say in front of Tom that the only man she has ever loved was him. Sadly, the reality hit him greatly and looses his temper. This was a shocking moment especially for Daisy, so she left immediately.

At this point, everything seemed like it was not going in Gatsby's way, and the very worse thing happened - the accident. Daisy was now confused about her feelings and has voiced it out. She ran out and tried to escape her reality again, by driving. Gatsby followed her in order to convince her. By chance, she hit and run the mistress of his husband, Tom Buchanan, and eventually died. Now, one man's anger doubled, and Gatsby is in more danger than he imagined.

It's hard to accept the death of our charming Gatsby but that is how a shakespearean tragedy works - it leads to the death of a man in high estate. In the end, it creates the emotion from the audience to feel sorry, pity, and even frustration maybe. Because how could we not? He got shot for covering the crime that he did not commit. Expecting a call from Daisy, yet all his waiting gone into vain and dies in a horrible way.
