Figurative Language

Simile- Page 2

“Alice sounds like a total grandma’s name. Like tissues-tucked-in-the-sleeves I-can’t find-my-purse what-time-is-Jeopardy!-on-again grandma.” (Mathieu pg. 2)

This was when Elaine was talking about how Alice’s mane doesn’t match how she acts. She was explaining how it sounds like a name that a nice, sweet older lady would have.

Repetition- Page 8

“Texting, talking, calling, drinking, kissing, laughing, dancing, drinking, texting, talking, and drinking.” (Mathieu pg. 8)

This was when Elaine was talking about how popular she is and how everyone always wants to be around her.

Metaphor - Page 3

“If you’re thinking of popularity as an apartment building, somebody like me is sitting on the roof of the penthouse, the band geeks are sleeping on the floor in the basement, and that freak shoe Kurt Morelli isn’t living in the building” (Mathieu pg. 3)

Elaine is talking and comparing how much popularity each person has and where they belong in society.

Hyperbole- Page 92

“I remember my shoulders sank ten feet with relief when she said that.” Mathieu 92)

This figurative language is exaggerating how relieved Kelsie was.

Personification- Page 87

“Her smile disappeared.” (Mathieu 87)

This is personification because it is stating that her smile slowly went away and faded.

Allusion- Page 94

“The gods themselves must have eventually gotten used to being around Aphrodite.” (Mathieu 94)

This is allusion because Aphrodite is a famous Greek God. It is referring to something famous.

Oxymoron- Page 84

“No doubt she learned about her at a prayer meeting when some sweet, gossipy Healy soul suggested praying for the town’s most wayward girl…” (Mathieu 84)

This is an Oxymoron because it’s two completely opposite things put together to describe someone.

Imagery- Page 35

“ Alice Franklin with the short not like any other girl and the gloriously loud laugh and the body that curves like an alpha wave.” (Mathieu 35)

Imagery is taken place in this sentence by giving us a clear image of what Alice looks like.

Irony- Page 23

“Until that Sunday when he got in his truck with Josh Waverly and they headed to Seller Brothers.” (Mathieu 23).

This is Irony because it says this to foreshadow Brandon's death.

Irony- page 120

“Ever since I was a kid, my mom have been dragging me to the Women's Care clinic and Planned Parenthood on Saturday mornings and making me hold up pictures of aborted fetuses” (Mathieu 120).

This is a really big Irony that takes place in the book. It talks about how Kelsie goes to protest about abortions, and how her family is against that. Even though they are against that her mom still takes her to go get one when she found out she was pregnant.

She was a teenager who was a virgin, and the first time she slept with someone she got pregnant. She didn’t know what to do or how to react. She didn’t tell anyone for a while until she had to tell her mom because she didn't know what to do. When she told her mom her mom didn’t say much to her. Kelsie and her mom went to the Women's Care Clinic early in the morning the next day after she told her. Kelsie’s mom had her get an abortion. Kelsie then a couple months after she had her abortion then saw Tommy who was originally the father, that she got pregnant and had an abortion.

Downsides of Being Smart~artical

This article talks all about the downsides of being intelligent. There are many downsides of being smart, for example, they normally aren’t like by a lot of people. Sometimes smart people correct others for something so minor that it would make people annoyed. Also, people tend to pretend to be friends so that they will get answers in school for homework or a test. Finally they also tend to overthink things instead of feeling. Being naturally gifted with intelligence is not always that fun.

In the book Kurt is a very smart person. He doesn't have many friends. He also has a really big crush on Alice. Many people make fun of him for how smart he is. In the book he is considered a nobody. The article explains that being intelligent leads sometimes not knowing how to interact with others. In this case Kurt doesn’t know how to talk to others, but mostly girls. When he interacts with Alice he gets really nervous, but Alice doesn’t mind. Kurt has to go through a lot being the intelligent kid.

Why Would Someone Have No Friend's? Artical

When someone doesn’t have friend's they either like it or don’t like it. Some people like not having friends because it gives them freedom and not having to worry about anyone else besides themselves. Others like having a lot of friends. They like always having something to do or someone to hangout with. Sometimes people who don’t have many friends may feel depressed and or get really bad anxiety. Sometimes people become mentally ill.

Alice after the rumors started to spread, she started losing friends. Alice became known as the slut, loser, and the nobody. She became very distant for everyone around her. She would always dress nice for school and she would always have a smile on her face. After the sex incident she started not wearing makeup and sweatpants and sweat shirts to school. Alice became very depressed and she didn’t have any friends.

How to Deal with a Death~artical

Death of a loved one is one of the worst things that people may have to experience in their lifetime. Too cope with this they suggest that you talk to someone. Whether it be your family, a doctor, or a friend. For the people who don’t talk to anyone they suffer from depression. Most people don’t like the feeling of being sad all the time so they do try and find help. Other who don’t find help tend to drift away from other people change the way they interact with others.

After the death of Brandon everyone in Healy becomes really sad. He was the quarterback and the most popular boy in school. Alice gets looked down upon by everyone in Healy and they can’t believe that she would sext him while he was driving. Brandon’s mom is the most saddest depressed person who is mourning over his death. A way she gets relieved was when she went to talk to Josh to ask him how he was.
