1. “You never even worried, with Jane, whether your hand was sweaty or not. All you knew was, you were happy. You really were” (Salinger 89).
2. This quote release that Jane is a low maintenance gal, as just is a good person who makes people happy. She is passive and that why she is enjoyable to hang around.
3. Holden is obsessed with her, and clings on to the idea of being with her. She is his escape from everything, he doesn't think she is a phony like everyone else. It shows his passionate side of him.

1. “But it wasn't just that he was the most intelligent member in the family. He was also the nicest, in lots of ways. He never got mad at anybody” (Salinger 43).
2. This shows Allie as a foil to Holden, as it goes on how smart, thoughtful/creative, and nice he was. A guy who people would want to be around.
3. This quote shows how Holden contrasts himself with Allie, and in a way makes him feel loserish. This shows how much he misses him, and how he wishes she had a better influence in his brother.

The "Perverts"

1. “I can even see how it might be a lot of fun, in a crumby way, and if you were both sort of drunk and all, to get a girl and squirt water or something all over each others face. The thing is, though, I don't like the idea” (Salinger 71).
2. This quote shows the "Perverts" to be lame, and just living life silly and away from everything.
3. This quote reveals the urge Holden has for intimacy, just anything involving being close with anyone. He doesn't have that, even with a friend. HE thinks everyone else is weird, but on the inside he feels like an outsider. He always changes his opinion and goes back and forth about it.

1. “I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can take her anywhere with you. You take her to a lousy movie, for instance, she knows it’s a lousy movie” (Salinger 75).
2. This tells us that Phoebe is a little more mature for her age, and is understanding in all ways. Some one who is younger, but can carry a conversation, which is good for Holden, as he is extremely immature in some ways.
3. This tells us that Holden wants to be able to talk to someone about his struggles, as he feels so lonely, he would even burden his young sister. He likes the accordance, for instance, the movies, she thinks a bit like him and he likes that. She is someone he can talk to, and not be judged.

1. "At the table right next to me, there were these three girls around 30 or so. The whole three of them were pretty ugly, [...] but one of them, the blonde one, wasn't too bad. She was sort of cute” (Salinger 77).
2. Bernice is just an average girl from Seattle. They are just three girls who are close, and want to travel and have fun, finding refuge in their relationship.
3. Holden says she is ugly, but then says she is kinda cute. Even though she is more than 2x his age, she is a shiny object to him. He is infatuated with the feeling of dancing with a girl, and just thinks of relating anything to Jane when he can.

Old Luce

1. “I like a mature person, if that’s what you mean. Certainly.” “You do? Why? No kidding, they better for sex and all?” “Listen. Let's get one thing straight. I refuse to answer any typical Caulfield questions tonight. What in hell are you going to grow up?”
2. This quote shows how Luce has changed from his former self. he used to be obsessed with sex, but now has grown up a little, especially going to a prestigious college like Colombia. He is less public about it.
3. This quote shows Holden's obsessiveness to know anything about sex. He is just like how Luce was, the only he seems to talk about. It shows his pit bull personality, he just can't stop if he has an idea.
