Wages and property were owned by their husbands. Women could be abused by their husbands because there was no law against it.

This came into notice by Lucretia Mott, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton when they went to the World Antislavery Convention in 1840. They weren't allowed to speak their minds because they were women. The two women then decided to hold a national women's rights convention in New York. The Declaration of Sentiments was created, which was based off the Declaration of Independence, created to win independence from Britain years ago. The Seneca Falls convention was the start of the women's rights movement. Many people were involved in this like Douglass, Truth, and the Grimke Sisters.

However, Horace Mann was determined to change that. Horace Mann was given the nickname "father of American Public Schools" because he lead the reformation of public education.

Mann was on the state board of education in Massachusetts, and it was there that he changed education forever. He spoke frequently of changing the system, so soon, people in Massachusetts voted, so that the people would pay taxes to build a better school system. Better schools were built, higher salaries were  made for teachers, there were even schools opened for the teachers to be trained.

Other states saw what Massachusetts did, and they realized they needed to do the same.
