The motivations for the attack are explained by different reasons, one of which refers to the confrontation between Islamic fundamentalists and American leaders, mainly due to the presence of American military personnel in the Middle East.
The month after the attacks, the US invaded Afghanistan. The nation was commanded by the Taliban, a fundamentalist and Islamic nationalist movement, in addition to being a shelter for the Al-Qaeda organization. Two decades after the attack, the US government closed down the occupation and the Taliban took control of Afghanistan again in August 2021. On September 11, 2001, the US suffered a series of terrorist attacks. In total, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial planes, namely: American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93. Of these, three reached their targets.
Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 am, while the second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower at 9:03 am. The third aircraft hit the Pentagon, headquarters of the US Department of Defense, located in Washington. The fourth plane, in turn, crashed in the state of Pennsylvania at 10:03 am, it is believed that the terrorists' aim was to hit the White House or the Capitol, but it was prevented after the passengers rebelled against the hijackers.
