One quote that I really liked was when Anna was talking to the police after Tom died. "It was self defense, I saw the whole thing. From the window. He went for her with the corkscrew. He would have killed her"(Hawkins 318-319).

I think that this an important quote because it shows that Anna and Rachel are coming together. Anna sticking up for Rachel is showing that she can put her differences aside and be a good person. Although Anna and Rachel haven't had the best relationship they are coming together to help each other because they both had to be married to Tom and deal with his lying and cheating all the time. In the book, I feel that this is a really powerful quote and kind of sums up what the whole book is about. The whole book is basically about Rachel, and her relationship with everyone in the book. It is also about the disappearance of Megan Hopewell which Tom was a part of and how they find out how she died and who did it. Overall, this quote to me stands out in the book.

One symbolic image from this book I feel is a Jack in the Box. the Jack in the Box to me symbolizes the surprise ending. Throughout the whole book, they were claiming that Scott or someone else had killed Megan they had no evidence that it was Tom so when Anna and Rachel started to find bits and pieces to figure it out it was a real shocker. Tom had an affair with Megan and ended up killing her because they were going to have a kid and because she was annoying him. The reason it was a surprise ending to me was because throughout the book it never mentioned Megan being with Tom until the end when Rachel finally remembered what happened the night that Megan disappeared. Also, at the end Tom ends up getting killed because he was attacking Rachel and Rachel used self defense also know as cork screwing him and killed him.

Conflict

In the book, one of the conflicts is Tom and Anna vs. Rachel. This is a big conflict in the story because Tom and Rachel used to be married. After they broke up Tom and Anna got together. Rachel during the book kept walking by the house, sending emails to Tom, calling the house and doing other things that can seem like she is stalking them. At one point in the story Rachel goes into the house and takes Anna and Tom's baby outside in their garden, while Anna is sleeping. Towards the end of the book, Rachel unexpectedly to tell Anna something about Tom. It turned out that Tim was having an affair with another women named Megan who went missing and Tom ended up killing by throwing a rock at her head. Tom comes home during that time and wonders what is going on and eventually ends up hurting Rachel. When Rachel gets outside Tom tries to cork screw Rachel which ends up backfiring and she cork screws him. When Anna comes out she starts pressing the cork screw in further and further to make sure he died. At this point, it was like Anna and Rachel were coming together and standing up for each other since both of them had to deal with this cheating and liar of a man.

Book Review from Publishers Weekly

/* Starred Review */ Rachel Watson, the principal narrator of Hawkins’s psychologically astute debut, is obsessed with her ex-husband, Tom. She’s having a hard time putting the past behind her, especially since she confronts it daily, during the hourlong commute to London from her rented room in Ashbury, Oxfordshire, when her train passes the Victorian house she once shared with Tom. She also frequently spies an attractive couple, four doors down from her former home, who she imagines to be enjoying the happily-ever-after that eluded her. Then, suddenly, the woman, pixie-ish blonde Megan Hipwell, vanishes—only to turn up on the front page of the tabloids as missing. The police want to question Rachel, after Anna, Tom’s new wife, tells them that Rachel was in the area drunkenly out of control around the time of Megan’s disappearance. Hawkins, formerly deputy personal finance editor of the Times of London, deftly shifts between the accounts of the addled Rachel, as she desperately tries to remember what happened, Megan, and, eventually, Anna, for maximum suspense. The surprise-packed narratives hurtle toward a stunning climax, horrifying as a train wreck and just as riveting. Agent: Lizzy Kremer, David Higham Associates (U.K.). (Jan.) --Staff (Reviewed November 10, 2014) (Publishers Weekly, vol 261, issue 45, p)

I agree with this book review strongly because it explains and has the same opinion I did on the book. I felt that the book was very well written with surprises here and there to keep you more interested overall. The ending of the book for me was by far the best part. At the end of the book there is a major plot twist making you wish there was more. The major plot twist was one that no one would expect. Overall, I feel that this book review goes along with my opinion and understanding of the book in general.

To me the woman getting into the car represents when Rachel realizes that it was Megan that got into Tom's car not Anna. This is a significant part in the book because it is when Rachel starts to figure out what happened to Megan. Rachel is starting to realize that Tom has something to do with the disappearance of Megan. After she realizes that Tom has something to do with it she goes and talks to Anna and try to protect her from Tom. Rachel explains to Anna what she remembers and when Tom gets home they find them both gossiping. Tom eventually confessing to killing Megan and eventually gets killed by Rachel.
