Making assumptions can cause tension and offence when communicating, as you are forming your own ideas and opinions and what you mean to say may come across in a negative way to the receiver. For example, you could cause offence to someone who is blind by assuming that they are incapable of daily activity. Another example of assumptions causing communication barriers would be someone opting to not talk to someone with learning difficulties as they assume that they would not understand what they are saying.

Care professionals need to have anawareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences when communicatingwith others. For example, people speak a range of languages, use differentwords, phrases and dialects in different regions of the UK and may usedifferent forms of non-verbal behaviour to express themselves duringinteractions. If care professionals don’t develop an awareness of culturalvariations in communication and in interaction styles and preferences, communications may be misunderstood or may make no sense at all.
