My name is Hanna Martinez. I am in my first semester of the Masters Mental Health and Wellness Counseling program. Upon completion of this program, I plan to continue to the LPC bridge. I hope to become a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in adolescents. A long term personal goal of mine is to be financially successful in order to buy my mother a house. However, my professional goal is to become licensed and help children navigate life while continuing to educate and bring awareness to myself and others, in hopes of destigmatizing mental health. I feel as though this course will help me gain a deeper understanding of trauma, such as the effects, proper coping strategies, and helpful resources. Additionally, I am hopeful this course will expand my understanding and ability to properly identify trauma in clients.

This code speaks about the duties a licensee must uphold. These include avoiding making false claims regarding yourself and others practices, services, and qualifications. As well as, a licensee must remain honest and fulfill their duty of protecting clients. This includes disclosing any danger to authorities, only evaluating clients when consent is given, and must not participate in any practices that are not deemed appropriate.

While reading through the modules and viewing the resources, I found this article to be helpful. I believe this will aid in my ability to offer coping skills to clients who are experiencing grief. Through this assignment, I discovered my lack of knowledge in regard to the stigma surrounding mental health. After taking the online quiz and viewing my results, I instantly became aware of the efforts I must make to understand the stigma and ways to destigmatize mental health. Additionally, I read an article which gave me three helpful tools in counseling. Deep listening, skillful questions, and goal setting are critical in properly assisting a client. The resources from this assignment will aid me in being able to self-reflect and implement tools to help adolescents.

Through making this guide, I acquired knowledge on depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use, and eating disorders. Additionally, I familiarized myself with the definition, causes, and resources for these disorders along with specific types of each disorder. As a future LPC, this guide will be helpful in learning these disorders and how to properly diagnose clients.

This discussion on trauma assisted in my understanding of trauma. I watched "We Are Columbine" which is a documentary on Columbine High School and the events that transpired in 1999. After viewing, I connected the victims experiences of trauma and my knowledge of trauma to detect, brainstorm resources, and form a plan to help students I may encounter. Through taking a deep dive into ACES, types of trauma, appropriate strategies, and plans for clients to overcome and/or cope with trauma; I have gained confidence in discussing and offering my opinion on the topic of trauma. This research, along with resources gained will assist me when dealing with adolescents who are experiencing, have experienced, or are more susceptible to trauma and its potential lasting effects.

This five hour course provided insight into the role, expectations, and strategies used to offer assistance and guidance during or following a disaster or crisis. This has broadened and intensified my knowledge and approach to the role of counseling, especially following a crisis and disaster. Not only can the knowledge gathered be directly applied to my professional role, but also my personal role as I now have tools and resources to effectively navigate appropriate steps in Psychological First Aid

This group project aimed to enforce collaboration in creating a Prevention Plan & Threat Assessment for substance abuse. Collaborating with classmates to create this plan not only aided in personal growth but also professional development. This has shown me an abundance of resources, strategies, and tools to plan, prevent, and assess substance use and abuse while also collaborating without outside professions to ensure adequate help to clients.

By completing this case study and Model of Crisis Intervention, I have gained an understanding of how to detect physical, emotional, relational, and cognitive factors, the needs and issues within these factors, appropriate wording, questions, and techniques to establish and maintain a relationship with clients, and possible solutions from the client and counselor. This will be used in my role as I will likely encounter crisis and I will be equipped with a broader and deeper understanding of prevention, tools, techniques.

Importance of Cultural Competence

Through an expanding and culturally diverse world, the need for cultural competence in counseling is evident (Sue et al., 2009). By understanding the importance of diversity and the way it is perceived and treated in counseling, a counselor is capable of respecting the culture of the client while offering appropriate help. Through cultural competence, a counselor is able to form and maintain relationships while respecting the values, beliefs, and goals of the client.
