Vanessa

Who is ADANI? What is their proposal?

ADANI, a mining company, proposed a project located in the Galilee Basin, which is The Carmichael Mine by its subsidiary company. The company plans to own a thermal coal mine to supply its power plants in India as a major private electricity supplier. This project was approved back in June 2019 and Adani plans to ship the coal from Galilee Basin to India.

What is the issue?

It is estimated that 10 million tonnes of thermal coal per annum will be produced as operation starts. This project is controversial due to its risk of extensive environmental damages that it might cause, especially ancestral lands and pollution, such as contaminations of aquifers. Adani also still needs some federal approvals before the mine can start its operations. Many are also unhappy with the way the Wangan and Jalingou people has been challenged to support this project.

Who are the stakeholders?

Indigenous community - The impact that this mining operation has on ancestral lands violates the rights of Indigineous people such as displacing the Adivasi people to build the coal station, destroying sacred sites, risk of cultural heritage loss for them as they do not give full consent to this project.

The environment - There is a risk of spring water and groundwater contamination and destroys critical habitat of endangered species due to the mine. With global warming being a concern now, burning of the coal drives more frequent heatwaves which threatens the ecosystem.
