A mega tsunami on the East Cost causes a mega storm, having catastrophic effects on the rest of the US. A massive hailstorm causes Dean's and his younger brother Alex's buses to crash into the front of a chain superstore. Many on Dean's bus die, so Alex's bus driver, Ms. Wooly takes charge. She leaves to get medical help. But riot gates close over the store. So 14 kids, from 5 to 17, are stuck together in a superstore. The weather causes a chemical leak in a nearby bio warfare factory. The group in the book was very broken at times. When Jake, one of the seniors, wasn't elected as leader him and another senior went off to get drunk and play laser tag. Even the protagonist joined in on the drug spree at times. Had Josie not come to her senses, the group could've snapped, causing deaths. In the beginning Jake takes charge, because Ms. Wooly leaves and he is the oldest in the group. He seems to do well at leading the group. But eventually his productivity lessens and he starts abusing the stores massive supply of drugs. After another kid is elected as leader, he falls into a slump, getting drunk more often and abusing other drugs.
