The SS refused to surrender. Himmler offered the U.S. a surrender, but when Hitler found out Himmler was not to be in any office positions. Later after the war Hitler said he would take all responsibility for their action (anyone in the SS), but many had to run. Himmler took off with a new name and tried to hide, but he was later caught and ended up committing suicide. Many were sent to the Nuremberg trials because of their crimes.
