I think it must be really difficult failing a student, I imagine part of the process would be questioning yourself and your own standards and teaching. There must be emotional consequences so it’s important that you are supported as a mentor and registered nurse to feel confident enough to do this by the workplace and the university that the student attends. Ultimately there are standards and competences that the NMC set and if students are unable to meet these and/or are deemed unsafe in their care then it comes down to safeguarding and protecting patients from harm.

Being the one “responsible” for changing that students pathway. Failing a placement can ultimately make or break that student and being the one to implement that decision must be very difficult. However, there are standards which must be met and if these are not then you must be honest with that student and yourself.

If I had identified a failing student my challenge as a mentor would be to try and look for ways to change that out come before it’s too late. Would the student be failing because of lack of interest and lack of wanting to succeed or because of lack of understanding and opportunity?
The potential impact of failing a student could be the make or break of a student’s hopes and fears and future as a nurse. So my outlook would be to support the student to try and get back on track or support them if nursing was not for them. I would have to be very sure that I was doing the best for the student and the profession and not what was the easiest thing for myself. After all, we have all been there to get to where we are now. And everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed.
