On 22nd of April 2019, DPP Bio students went for a field trip to Rimba Ilmu. The purpose of the field trip was to enrich the knowledges of Ecology and Biodiversity.I was excited since I couldn’t recall when the last time I went for a field trip. Finally, I managed to get a closer look at the ‘real things’ which referred to the Biodiversity instead of looking at text books and web browser. #Seeing is believing

I personally adore plants that has medicinal value such as Kacip Fatimah & Tongkat Ali.

Checkpoint 1:Exhibition Rainforest and Our Environment

At this checkpoint, Mr Khairul explained to us in details regarding the rain forest and also different types of trees that have high value in timber industries such as Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis),Keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.), Meranti (Shorea spp.) and lots more. I was thrilled by the abundance of plant samples and spices displayed at this exhibition such as Cloves (Myrtaceae sp) and Cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp) which were easily identified by me as I used them in cooking especially when making curry. These spices act as food additive, flavouring and medicine. This exhibition was very informative along with Mr Khairul explanation. I was able to gain, discuss and exchange information with my peers. Different layers of forest (forest floor, understory, canopy, emergent) holds different types of biodiversity. It is very important to preserve and conserve this valuable Biodiversity not only to maintain the balance in ecosystem as well as to benefit from their natural products (active compound), materials and medicinal value.

Herbarium is the 'storage' for preservation of plant samples. The acronym for UM Herbarium is KLU. To my suprise, the oldest sample dated 1902 which already aged 117 years old !. Mr. Khairul explained briefly regarding the process and maintenance of the herbarium. I found that the preservation process was interesting and quite simple as it involved simple technique such as pressure application which can be conducted by secondary school'students. This process can be incorporated under subtopic dichotomy identification. As such, students will be able to have on- site experiences and lead to meaningful learning.

Eurycoma longifolia (commonly called tongkat ali or pasak bumi or malaysian ginseng) is a flowering plant in the family Simaroubaceae.

Medicinal Value
Its roots are a traditional “anti-aging” remedy and modern supplements are intended to improve libido, energy, sports performance and weight loss. Previous studies have shown properly-standardized Tongkat Ali to stimulate release of free testosterone, improve sex drive, reduce fatigue, and improve well-being.

Moreover, its root extract can also improves stress hormone profile and certain mood state parameters, suggesting that this “ancient” remedy may be an effective approach to shielding the body from the detrimental effects of “modern” chronic stress, which may include general day-to-day stress, as well as the stress of dieting, sleep deprivation, and exercise training.
