My goal is to go to Northumbria Univeristy to study Interior Design. This is a new direction for me and a new path but from what I've researched and asked people it really looks like the course I could really progress on. I've researched the requirements for the course and I reach all of them, I've also looked at the portfolio needs and I think if I really stick to it and put my mind to it I could create a great portfolio that will impress them. 
Also I have past work from my production arts course that I could add because they said I could add 3D models etc. and I have a few of them that I did. I've also looked at open days at Northumbria and I've booked for a day on the 27th of October. I'm taking this chance to ask questions about the course and learn more about what the course entails. 
The different aspects of the course range from refurbishment to architectural design. I'm not 100% sure which path I would take in the future because I want to learn about the different parts and what they entail and I want to see which I would be best at. I definitely not interested in Architectural Design as it's something that's never really caught my eye or something I'd be interested in. I don't like the idea of going in with a straight plan and having everything decided and knowing exactly what I'm going to do, because you never what's going to happen and University is so much more different with different opportunities and experiences that can alter your choices. 
On the 28th of October I went to an open day at Northumbria Uni, it was a great day and I learnt a lot about the University and what it had to offer. I also went to a talk about Interior Design that they held in the University of Design. The talk was really good and informative about the course and what you do and how you learn. I also looked around the classrooms and they were fantastic, the equipment is all new and the classrooms are set out very casually, there's a area with couches where students can take a break but also a relaxed place to work.

I do have a design based education as I have a GCSE in Art, A diploma in Production Arts and working towards a Art and Design diploma and also hoping to study Interior Design for 4 years. At University they teach us CAD so I would then have a full understanding of it. I work well with large groups and I can take control of a project and make sure people understand what they are doing, also I have the skills to help them. The skills I still need are definitely education based, a BA Honors in Interior Design would definitely be a huge help, also from that hopefully my people skills will have developed more so I have more of an understanding in a working environment.

The talk was really good, he gave a lot of information about the illustration and graphic design course and what they do for the 3-4 years and what they expect from you and where you could end up. I personally wouldn't take that course as it's not my strong point or where I see myself working but for someone who wants to go down that path it looked amazing.

He then spoke about the campus and the city around it, he also spoke about what their is to do etc.I really liked the sound of the University and how they go about things but unfortunately they don't offer a course in the route I would like to take which is a shame because if they did I would definitely consider going there. But he did give everyone who wants to go to uni some good tips on portfolios and gave us an in sight into the creative working world which I found very helpful because he didn't sugar coat it he was straight up and honest about what happens and how people can act/do. I'm going to take his advice and use it on my own portfolio which has made me a bit more confident on what I want to put in it and ow it will represent me.

I already know a few positives that I already do, I decide before hand what order I'm speaking in and that helps me stay calm because it helps me know that I'm not going to struggle with what to talk about next and when to end the presentation. I try to practice and prepare before hand and on the day so I know if there's any changes I need to make, also I like to practice so I hopefully I don't stutter. The don'ts that I know I need to work on is speaking clearly, if I get nervous or worried that I'm rambling or I've stuttered a little, I panic and start mumbling or speaking quietly. Also another one is I sometimes forget to smile which can then lead me to look very uninterested in my presentation and/or moody and bored. Also on the open day I could get a tour around the design building and see where I'd hopefully be spending the next 4 years. I absolutely loved the open day I saw all of the campus and the design building, the facilities were amazing and the staff and students were great. I fell in love with the design building even more, the Interior Design floor was amazing, we also had a presentation of what the course entails and what would happen during the 4 years which was very informative and exciting. Before my interview we had another tour of the facilities and showed around the campus'. We also got to speak to 2 current students on the course which was very helpful as most of us had questions and queries about the interview. We also had another presentation about the course and what it entailed which again was very helpful but this time we were giving and told information about the course that we weren't told on the open day, we were told and talked through trips that the course took through the years and I was very happy to find out that we travel to New York and London to work with different companies and see different exhibitions. 
The interview itself was a bit nerve racking but it was fine in the end, it was calming to find out that the woman who interviewed me hadn't ever interviewed anyone before but also it didn't help that she didn't tell me at first because the way she acted and the questions she asked me made me more nervous. I want to get the highest grades I can so I can always have the grades with me on my CV, which will give me a bit of an advantage for job interviews. When looking at different universities it reassured me that Northumbria is definitely my first choice as they offer a lot more than the other Universities do and they have the parts the others have missed out (such as live projects and working with actual companies). Kingston University:
I've never originally thought about Kingston University before but while looking on UCAS I really liked the sound of their course. It was obviously very similar to the course at Northumbria, but they teach slightly different topics and how they approach things. I definitely added these as one of my options because I was curious to to see the studio they teach in and how they build up work in there. I was still a bit weary because they didn't offer a fourth year, abroad or not, and for me personally I would rather do a 4 year course with or without going abroad, because normally 4th years are for placements which I would really want to do. They also focus on more older Interior Design compared to Northumbria and Glasgow, which I don't think I would of 100% enjoyed. They also focus more on in the second year more obscure refurbishment than normal revamps (such as a space station), which yes seems fun and interesting but Northumbria work with actual companies and we do live projects.

Glasgow School of Art:
The Glasgow School of Art was one of the very last places I looked at, again not a place I had obviously thought of but when looking and reading about the course I was very interested in it. They had a very different approach to how they want to look at Interior Design, they want to look at it from  more of a nature side, which I found very unusual and unique, I personally would of maybe struggled with this because I've never been great with nature in art and design so it wouldn't have been great for me. As great as the studio projects looked they didn't offer things that I think would of helped me progress. They only had very few live projects which can be seen as good in some sense but I think live projects could really help you with your professional career, also they didn't really say or not if they worked with actual companies or not, whereas Northumbria offer a huge range of different companies they work with.  ]]> 2018-04-16 18:04:45 UTC https://padlet.com/494195/6qwyctsz0a66/wish/252279796
