They wanted to build a life somewhere where their religion wasn't persecuted. Life with complete and utter freedom with practicing whatever kind of religion they sought was liberating for the pilgrims. They wanted to, in a way, start over and begin their lives with religion being the foundation of everything they do. With that in mind, what else would the pilgrims need to convince themselves that America wasn't the perfect panacea for all their misery with England's ways?
