Source Type: Practitioner
Abstract: "Cooperative learning changes students' and teachers' roles in classrooms. The ownership of teaching and learning is shared by groups of students, and is no longer the sole responsibility of the teacher. The authority of setting goals, assessing learning, and facilitating learning is shared by all. Students have more opportunities to actively participate in their learning, question and challenge each other, share and discuss their ideas, and internalize their learning."

Findings: "Along with improving academic learning, cooperative learning helps students engage in thoughtful discourse and examine different perspectives, and it has been proven to increase students' self esteem, motivation, and empathy."

Available at: https://www.teachervision.com/professional-development/cooperative-learning

Source Type: Popular
Abstract: "The cooperative learning strategy known as the "jigsaw" technique helps students create their own learning. Teachers arrange students in groups. Each group member is assigned a different piece of information. Group members then join with members of other groups assigned the same piece of information, and research and/or share ideas about the information. Eventually, students return to their original groups to try to "piece together" a clear picture of the topic at hand. That's the simple overview. The resources below will fill in the details and provide examples of the technique in action."
Findings: The jigsaw method is utilized to help students create their own learning, learn from others, and develop their own learning style.
Available at: https://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/strategy/strategy036.shtml

Since 1971, thousands of classrooms have used jigsaw with great success."
Findings: "The jigsaw classroom has a four-decade track record of successfully reducing racial conflict and increasing positive educational outcomes such as improved test performance, reduced absenteeism, and greater liking for school. Just as in a jigsaw puzzle, each piece — each student's part — is essential for the completion and full understanding of the final product.

If each student's part is essential, then each student is essential; and that is precisely what makes this strategy so effective."

vAvailable at: https://www.jigsaw.org/
