Time lords have two hearts which keep him alive when his body is damaged, he then "regenerates" which is what allows so many people to play him. There are currently 13 regenerations of the doctor (if the war doctor is included) and the show is surely not stopping anytime soon, so plenty of actors are sure to play the crazy doctor.

The sonic screwdriver often changes its look through regenerations, but it wasn't always there when the doctor needed it. It made its debut in the original show but was forget about until fans demanded that it make its way into the new series, now it sticks with him till the end.
