In the second pen scene, Nash is sitting there with Thomas talking about whether or not he is crazy. Nash's body language is very closed off as if he is uncomfortable to be there in that room. He is holding his case up to his chest as if it was a barrier to keep him safe from the territory that was so harsh to him the first time. As he sits at the table talking with Thomas about his mental problem he seems to only look at the table and try to avoid looking at Thomas's eyes. This shows that even though he is a esteemed professor and a man that has created a new equilibrium he still feels not good enough to be in that room. As he is being given the pens, the lighting on Nash has fully come onto him becoming the most li person in the room. The light is as if he has a special spotlight just for himself. As well as the lighting changing so does Nash's body language. He becomes more open and his back straightens showing he is feeling more pride being in that room. He is feeling more at home when he is being recognized for winning the Noble Peace Prize.

The director uses many different techniques to show how John Nash has changed as a character. One of these techniques is music. An example of this is during the second pen scene. All the professors that John works with give him a pen, a sign of recognition for a great accomplishment by a teacher. In this case, John has been awarded a Nobel Prize in Economics. When he is finally awarded the pens, an uplifting, poignant soundtrack comes on. This is used to show that John is finally being recognised for his great accomplishment, something which he was striving to do since the beginning of the film. The music is helping to portray this as it is happy and uplifting, which is showing the feelings that John would be feeling after being given the pens and such a high level of recognition for his achievement. This shows that John has changed as a character, as during the beginning of the film, this was all he ever wanted, a great achievement and some form of recognition.

A technique used by Ron Howard in the film a beautiful mind is panning outwards into a long shot. Certain camera shots can portray a persons expressions and feelings. For example in the first pen scene where professor Eisenstein provides john with a reality check we see the camera panning outwards into a long shot of john Nash backing away from the commotion of the pen ceremony. The purpose of this was to show the distance between Nash and the ceremony as if to show him backing away from the dream and person he is wanting to become.

Ron Howard also uses the technique of a

In the film, ‘A Beautiful Mind’ the director, Ron Howard, makes use of various language techniques in order to engage and portray his purpose to the audience. A way in which Howard effectively communicates Nash’s personality is through the use of dialogue. For example, in the pen ceremony scene, the professor and Nash are standing outside the entrance to the dining hall, watching someone ritualistically receive pens from fellow professors. As they watch, the professor asks, “what do you see John?” In which Nash replies, “recognition” the professor then states “try seeing accomplishment” wherein Nash questions, “is there a difference?” The purpose of the dialogue is to show us how Nash thinks that is easy to be recognised when you have done something that is extraordinary or something different. He thinks that recognition and accomplishment are the same because you will not be recognised unless you have accomplished something. But this is not what the director is trying to show us but the idea that accomplishment is something that does not happen very quickly but it takes more time and hard work to be able to achieve something successfully. Another aspect that the director used is music to uplift the mood of the audience. For example, we hear string instruments play as Nash receives the pens. The use of the music helps create a very joyful atmosphere because of what Nash has accomplished. It uplifts the mood of the audience because we see that something great has happened. The director wanted to make the audience feel happy for Nash because we have seen his hard work throughout the film and now he has successfully achieved something. This is in contrast with the music that the director used at the start when Nash has failed to receive any placement. The music then increases volume as the other men recognises Nash which makes the audience even more proud of Nash. This is because despite his extraordinary condition he has managed to do something successfully. The director has successfully revealed his purpose through the use of dialogue and music.
