Transportation played a key role in the early stages of industrialization. With the creation of machines that produced goods more easily, and the growing market, there needed to be a connection between the producer and consumer, which is where transportation comes into play. The development of roads, canals, and railways dramatically changed the economy of the United States and fueled the industrial revolution even more.

The use of steam power proved to be the technological innovation that was the most important for early-nineteenth-century economic development. The use of steam powered machines expedited the process of production of goods and made for more regulatory and uniform parts that could be interchanged. Steam power even lead to the development of the steamboat and locomotive, which would greatly increase transportation and the distribution of goods.

When the United States shifted from a subsistence to market economy, many groups of people were impacted. Farmers produced more goods to provide for the growing and spreading population. Laborers worked long, hard hours to produce more product for the expanding market. Women were introduced into factories and were also subjected to poor working conditions and even less pay.

The Market and Transportation Revolutions

The market revolution was a time period of exponential growth in the American marketplace. The market revolution was spurred primarily by the development of new transportation systems during the transportation revolution, which connected distant markets to buyers. With these new connections to buyers, farmers and factories produced products for the market instead of solely for themselves.
The transportation revolution was caused mainly by the shift in economy. As people began to see opportunities for profit in the rapidly growing market, they realized the West was the place to be, or so they thought. While the northeast was in the midst of the industrial revolution, there was an agricultural empire beginning to form in the West. People began to move West due to the infertile soil of the northeast, as more and more people moved westward, more efficient modes of transportation were required for the movement of people as well as goods being produced in the now booming market

The factory system was not as beneficial to all as it was to some. Women and children were used in factories and forced to work long hours for little pay. The working conditions were hazardous as well as sub-par when it came to health and cleanliness. They were forbidden from forming unions to request higher pay and had very few opportunities to share their opinions on the condition of their workplace.

During this time period, many people were moving Westward in search for more space and possible economic opportunities. The population of the United States was growing rapidly, doubling every 25 years. Due to the increased population, cities became more densely populated and the only direction to expand was West. Westward expansion was also fueled by the immigration of many Irish and German workers moving to America due to limited space, persecution, or famine in Europe.
