  1. Colaboración horizontal:  Los miembros del equipo colaboran entre sí, sin la mediación de un jefe o coordinador. Lo hacen voluntariamente, en tiempo y forma.
  2. Motiva la generación de ideas para proporcionar soluciones: cuando los grupos se reúnen en un entorno de igualdad y donde todas las opciones son valoradas, sus miembros son motivados a aportar ideas. De este modo, se ‘unen cabezas’ para ofrecer diferentes perspectivas y experiencias para resolver problemas comunes.
  3. Genera un fuerte sentido de propósito: los miembros del equipo valoran el trabajar juntos. Siempre se genera una razón para trabajar juntos y beneficiar a la compañía en su conjunto.
  4. Permite la participación equitativa: una vez que se inicia una sesión de trabajo colaborativo, los gerentes deben entender que ‘los títulos y cargos se deben quedar en la puerta’. Es la única forma de generar un sentido de informalidad y lograr desbloquear los patrones jerárquicos para la generación libre de ideas.
  5. Permite la planificación de megaproyectos virtuales educativos o empresariales: un ejemplo de esta característica son las wikis. En estos espacios colaborativos, sus miembros publican contenidos de forma anónima.

Se diferencia, sin embargo, del trabajo en equipo en que lo que se persigue en el trabajo colaborativo es la producción de conocimientos, y no tanto la optimización de resultados.
