You will be supported in your understanding of learning and teaching in a transdisciplinary, concept-driven curriculum and how to design this in your own school context. This workshop invites you to inquire into your own teaching practices and reflect on how you can develop the capabilities of a PYP teacher.

Also, I’ve always strived for my students to recognize and respect their own diversity and the diversity that surrounds them in their daily life, which I feel is an integral part in giving them the skills to create a better world.

To which part of your reading do you feel you need to extend your understanding?

I'd like to further my understanding of the six themes of the PYP program. I'd like to get a deeper understanding of exactly what each theme means and how each one is represented in a lesson in a way that the students are the ones making the connections to each theme.

To which part of your reading do you feel is most challenging to you?

Although I understand the goal of the program and what we are striving to instill in our students, I'd like to better understand what this looks like in our daily lessons and how lessons are designed and planned to encompass the themes and the aspects of the learner profile.

Looking forward to meeting those new to our school. It's likely I will be working with students in some of your classes!

CONNECT - The thing I connected to the most in this reading was the five categories of skills that span all IB programs. I appreciate the different aspects of theses skills that help develop the whole child, not just focusing on making sure they can recite back information told to them. It is important for students to be able to think for themselves, to know how to research a question they have, to communicate what they are learning, and to share their learning with others in a respectful way. It is important to help them learn these valuable skills so they can be better prepared for their future life.

EXTEND - Since I have never taught in an IB school, I would like to extend my learning of the learner profiles and how they can be incorporated throughout the school day. I also would like to learn more about the culminating project (PYP exhibition) and what is entailed with that.

CHALLENGING - I am interested to learn more about the “approaches to teaching” and how I can develop those approaches in conjunction with my own established teaching style and practices.

I think it is incredibly important not only to teach our students the necessary knowledge, but in the short time we have them in our classrooms, we try to shape them into engaged citizens of the world. I think that incorporating the IB programme into their day-to-day life will have a huge impact on them in this goal.

Extend: I am really looking forward to extending my knowledge in the approaches to teaching. This list was like reading about everything I want to be in my classroom and for my students, so I am really excited to develop these skills.

Challenging: I think the thing that seems most challenging to me are the learner profiles. I am wondering how to incorporate them into my lessons in a meaningful way each day, but I am very excited to learn how.
