Author: Barbara Park

This book about a young girl starting kindergarten is a great example to show young children how not to act when starting school, and would also be perfect to use for a grammar lesson where the children would be able to listen and pick out grammatical mistakes that they hear. In this story Junie B. is not excited about having to ride the bus, so she decides to hide in her teacher's classroom closet and roam through the school after the school day ends. Eventually her mother and teacher come back to the school to find her and they explain to her that she will enjoy riding on the bus once she has a friend to sit with. They find Junie a friend and from then on she enjoys riding the bus!

This story would be perfect for children who are learning about rhyming words or are just learning how to read because many of the lines repeat throughout the book, so they will be able to repeat the lines multiple times allowing them to better recognize the words. She swallows items like: rulers, pencils, books, and even a book bag!

Author: Eric Carle

This book starts off with a tiny egg laying on a leaf that hatches and out comes a baby caterpillar. The baby caterpillar is very hungry and eats a bunch of different fruit, then it eats a lot of junk food and feels very sick, so the next morning it eats a leaf and feels better. The caterpillar builds itself a cocoon to stay in for a few weeks, then it turns into a beautiful butterfly! This book allows children to count along with how many of each item the caterpillar eats. It also has a positive message about eating healthy. This message is conveyed when the caterpillar eats all of the junk food and then “had a stomachache.” However, once he ate “one nice green leaf”…”he felt much better.” This book is also perfect for teaching young children about the life cycle of the butterfly.

It takes him on a magical journey to the north pole, where he meets Santa Claus. Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas, and he told him that all he wanted was “one silver bell from Santa’s sleigh.” Later that Christmas morning he opened up a gift from “Mr.C”, which contained his bell that he had left in the seat of Santa’s sleigh.
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Author: Eileen Christelow

This story is about five little monkeys who are going through their nightly bedtime routine of bathing and brushing their teeth. Once their mother puts them to bed, they all start jumping on the bed and fall off one at a time. Each time one falls off “mama calls the doctor,” who tells them “no more monkeys jumping on the bed.” The monkeys do not listen though and once all five of them have fallen off and have been put back into bed, the mama monkey starts jumping on her bed, because she can finally go to sleep. This book is a fun read for children, because of the rhythm that it has. You can almost sing it and it is perfect for younger children, because it is repetitive so they can sing along with it too and predict what the book will say. This makes it perfect for word recognition, because the kids can anticipate what the next line will be.

Mr.Falker helps Trisha to overcome her challenges and learn to read. This book is perfect for children who have learning disabilities and those who do not have learning disabilities.

Author: Tomie DePaola
Award: Caldecott Medal

In this story there is an old woman who was a witch. “She could cure headaches,” make love potions, and “get rid of warts.” She wanted someone to help her out around her house, because she was getting so old. She hired “Big Anthony,” but he was told not to touch the pasta pot. One night he watched her singing to the pasta pot, which then made pasta. Anthony told everyone in town about the magic pasta pot, but no one believed him. When Strega Nona left, Anthony disobeyed her rules and touched the pasta pot. He made pasta for all of the people in town, but he didn’t do the spell right and the pot kept making pasta. When Strega Nona came home she saved the town from the pasta, and made Anthony eat all of the pasta. This story was very cute, and connects with children, because it is a great example for them about touching something that they are not supposed to touch.

This book is perfect for teaching young children colors.

Author: Jeff Kinney

This story is about Greg Heffley and the summer road trip that his mother has decided that his family will go on. She decides that the family will go on a vacation just like the one in the magazine she has been reading. However, things do not go exactly as plans. They miss important stops on their trip, get stuck staying at a dirty hotel with a weird family, having a pet baby pig that keeps making things even more difficult, etc. Then to make it worse the sun roof on the car breaks and the car floods along with everyone in it when it rains. However, Greg's mom is still determined to have a great vacation, but without following the magazine. They continue on and end up ruining a funeral procession and getting the van filled with seagulls. They have a small accident, so while the car is being fixed they head to an amusement park and get their clothes stolen from the weird family that they had met earlier in the story. They finally decide to head home and things continue to get worse. This story is perfect for a back to school assignment. You can read it with the class, then have them write their own story about a crazy summer adventure that they went on.
