Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's psychosocial stages of development is trust vs. mistrust. A child will develop this within the first year of life. I believe this stage is the most important because it determines how children will view the world. When a child trusts, they are able to connect and develop a bond with someone other than their mother. The child will also be able to make good eye contact. When it comes to mistrust, a child will do the opposite. The child will not make appropriate eye contact, avoid social interactions, and cling to their mother.
For myself, I believe I learned how to trust by going to daycare and interacting with the daycare provider in a positive environment.

The second stage is called Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. A child will typically enter this stage around age 2. (Toddler years) During this stage, a child will be able to stand on their feet by themselves, work well with others or alone, and become more independent.
When a child is showing shame and doubt, they are less independent, need more directions, and need help making decisions.
Although a child may think they are able to be more independent and create decisions on their own, sometimes they are in need of assistance from an adult.
At the age of 2, I was able to become more independent with the help of my parents. Decisions ranged from what to wear or having help learning how to walk.

Stage 3 is initiative vs. guilt. This stage usually happens between the ages of 3-5. (Preschool-age children) In this stage of development the child is wanting to do more but with others' approval. They are starting to gain a sense of purpose. They are able to take initiative and accept challenges.

Guilt can be seen as a child with low energy levels, poor eye contact, and putting themselves down. Guilt may not be seen as positive to the child but it is beneficial for their development. If a child feels guilt or shame when they do something bad, it will keep them from doing the same mistake in the future.
Around this time is where I started to be punished for my wrongdoings. This is where I became shameful of making poor decisions. Having this guilt feeling helped me learn to make good decisions vs poor ones.

Stage 4 is usually developed over time between the ages of 6-puberty. (Elementary school) This is around the time a child's mind really starts turning. They are starting to wonder how things work. Competency can be shown by enjoying projects, learning, and experiments.
Inferiority can be shown by not being confident in their own work, sitting back and watching vs doing the work themselves, procrastinating, and having low self-esteem.
Around this age in my life, I feel like I lacked a lot of competencies and showed more traits of inferiority. I wasn't very confident in myself so I didn't show my full potential.

Stage 5 is developed within a child's teen years. When a child is finding their identity, they are challenging those who are in authority, having interest in the opposite sex, be confident in themselves and starts creating unofficial plans for their future.
On the opposite end, a child may be experiencing identity confusion by being overly hostile towards authority, questioning their sexual identity, and lacks self confidence.
Around my teen years, I remember being more defiant with my parents. Although it was normal to happen around that age, later in life it taught me to appreciate my parents.

Stage 6 is developed between the ages of 20-40. (Young adulthood) During this stage, young adults are struggling to form close connections/relationships. Examples of intimacy would be having a close friendship, participating in local small groups, or developing a social/emotional intimacy with someone they love.
Isolation can be displayed as one who is sabotaging the relationships they have with others or becoming overly defensive towards others who surround him.
This is the stage I am in currently being 23 years old. I have developed close relationships with those around me and have learned to really appreciate them. Sometimes I find myself taking a step back because I feel as if I don't deserve the relationships I have but I have to remember not to isolate myself from the people I love.

Stage 7 is developed between the ages of 40-60. (Middle adulthood) Generativity is shown when one is wanting to make a difference in the world through things such as family and work. Some examples of this could be completing productive work, creating goals/reaching goals, or investing in the younger generations.
Stagnation can be shown by complaining, becoming resentful, or having dissatisfaction within themselves, their work, or their personal relationships.
Although I have not reached this stage in life, I hope that I am able to create/reach goals for myself that create a successful life for myself until I reach the final stage of Erikson's stages of development.

Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair

The last stage of Erikson's psychosocial development is developed at ages 65+. (Late adulthood) The latest stage of life is when one will reflect on their life and can either feel a sense of satisfaction or sometimes will feel despair.
One can display integrity in this part of their life by accepting that they are aging and death is a normal part of life that is bound to happen. Before one dies, they will also be able to reflect on how proud they are of themselves for the successful lives they've lived this far, being self-approving, and continuing to be an example to others.
On the other side of this stage, they can feel a sense of failure. Some may feel like they have not accomplished in life what they should have, have low self-esteem, become angry/irritable, and feel like they have nothing else to live for.

Being young myself, I feel like this is the stage in life that I am most afraid of. I think that I'm afraid I will develop more characteristics of being in despair rather than having a sense of integrity due to having such high hopes for my future.
