  • The average literacy rate was 73% in 2011, 6 years later, it went up by 4.7 in 2018. Literacy rates in Urban areas were 87.7% higher than in rural areas with 73.5%
Environmental factors that affect well-being in India. 
  • Insufficient supply of safe, clean water. 
  • Polluted air/waters
  • Worsening soil fertility → short supply of bad quality food

  • Hotter climate, and warmer weather, impact farming, gradually becoming uninhabitable 

Human factors that affect well-being in India
  • corruption/crime --> People feel more anxious which leads to social withdrawal. 

  • Food security --> Numerous health problems such as chronic illnesses. 

  • Slums --> Higher rates of malnutrition. 

  • Education --> A good quality education is a foundation for healthy well-being.

  • Population --> there is a higher demand for resources due to the population density. 

  • Poverty --> people struggle to meet basic needs, including access to food, clothing, education and healthcare

  • Poor Sanitation --> increases the risk of infectious diseases such as cholera. 

  • Spiritual and individual beliefs --> encourages people to have better relationships with themselves, other and the unknown. 


Overall well-being in India
  • India's overall well-being falls in the bottom tier of countries. Nevertheless, the country has strong democratic institutions and its thorough electoral processes at the national and state levels allow the country to do well in citizen pariticpation. However, India's young people experience challenges in education, health, technology, economic opportunity and gender equality

The life expectancy = 60 yrs which means that is a deterioration in the population. Men also now have a higher literacy rate than women. This shows that there is a huge gender gap.

      • There are times where violence is rather prevalent
      • This increases the risk experienced when trying to access the necessities of life

    Overall, the Philippines has an average level of wellbeing. Although it has high levels of literacy rates, it suffers from issues including much of the population experiencing inadequate access to freshwater and food, pollution and the introduction of foreign concepts.

    Bhutans GDP in 2021 was 2.54 Billion USD, compared to a country like Australia is quite behind, as Australia had 1.553 trillion USD in 2021, Bhutan does not use GDP to calculate the wellbeing of its citizens though, during the mid 70s, the Bhutanese king of the time created a new form of measuring wellbeing called Gross National Happiness, which uses 33 indicators to decide the current GNH of the country. It shows us that 40.8% of people in Bhutan have achieved such happiness, and the remaining 59%.

    Bhutan has a literacy rate that is roughly increasing 10.55% annually.

    Bhutan is a country that is completely made up of mountains known as the Himilayas. It has a harsh climate with lots of air pollution and because of this fact bhutan has a lower GDP and a lower wellbeing due to the fact that people of Bhutan spend most of their time trying to stay alive rather than developing and enjoying their lifes.

     As of 2010, the GNH value for Bhutan is 0.737. This shows us that 40.8% of people are overall happy however 59% feel that they are more unhappy. Bhutan ranks 95th out of 156 countries that have been ranked for GNH. This means that they rank quite low in terms of the happiness of the people. This GNH along with the low GDP rate and having a literacy rate lower than average means that Bhutan has a lower state of wellbeing.
