As the sun set earlier and earlier each day during the winter, priests at Machu Picchu performed a ceremony to tie down the sun and prevent it from disappearing completely. These sites, as well as the temple in Cuzco, were used for Inca sacrifices. The Incas unlike the Maya and the Aztecs rarely sacrificed humans.
