One element of propaganda used here was the choice of German people they showed throughout the video. I noticed a lot of children, women, and old people while they were telling the American soldiers that these people were not their friends. This video also used name calling throughout the video to make the Germans/Nazi's look bad. This piece of propaganda also was meant to reach people on an emotional level, and did this when the beginning of the video said, "Your sons might have to do it again," when talking about fighting these wars.

The trial of Julius Streicher was important because he was one of the first Nazi propagandists put on trial. It was challenging to build a case against him because it was hard to prove that there was a direct link between Nazi propaganda and the enactment of aggressive policy or mass murder. Most of the evidence against Steicher came from his writings for "Der Strumer" which "provided ample evidence of Steicher's fanatical hatred for Jews and calls for action against them" (155). Streicher argued that he only found out about the mass murders after they had lost the war. He also claimed that his writings were meant to "inform" the public and not meant it incite them. Streicher was eventually found guilty for crimes against humanity and he was sentenced to death by hanging. This was significant because he was one of the first people persecuted and facing consequences for the horrific mass murders.

After the Nazi party was defeated, the allies made many efforts for the de-Nazification of Germany. During the de-Nazification, all members from the nazi party who held positions of influence were removed and persecuted. Additionally, the allies worked to "convince the German people that they have suffered a total military defeat and they they cannot escape responsibility for what they have brought upon themselves" (146). I think this was an especially important part of the de-Nazification because many German soldiers were brainwashed by Hitler. The Office of Military Government in the U.S Zone established the law for Liberation from National Socialism and Militarism. This law provided for the establishment of German de-
Nazification courts in the America sector. As apart of de-Nazification everything that was related to the Nazi party was removed. This included street signs, posters, and statues. Most of these things were destroyed or burned. Lastly, classrooms were reeducated. According to the book "State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda," "Germans were exposed to cultural offerings and ideas denied to them under the Nazis" (150). I think that this is really important because many students were only allowed to read from textbooks that spread Nazi propaganda. It is important for them to be educated on factual material.

Before the process of de-Nazification could occur it was imperative that the German people become fully aware of what was happening behind their backs, sometimes quite literally in their backyards. Under U.S. and British instruction the townspeople from nearby Weimar were forced to visit Buchenwald "to see what had transpired in their own backyards, while villagers were ordered to attend memorial services for murdered prisoners and then ceremoniously bury them in local cemeteries or mass graves". The German people at this time held massive distrust about everything and everybody thanks to the manipulative work of Hitler and Goebbels's propaganda. To shatter the rumor that the scenes German citizens were made to watch were fabricated or from previous bombings, filmmakers were instructed to show nearby roads as well as German residents at the sites to testify to what they saw there. Denazification involved a complete removal of a culture that had been forced upon the German people for years. "It entailed renaming streets, parks, and buildings that once had Nazi or militaristic associations; removing monuments, statues, signs, and emblems linked with Nazism or militarism; confiscating Nazi Party property; eliminating Nazi propaganda from education, the median prohibiting Nazi or military parades, anthems, or the public display of Nazi symbols" (p. 149). Just as important Germans were exposed to cultural offerings and ideas denied to them under the Nazis; this included art, music and theater.

Julius Streicher was a Nazi propagandist who was the editor of Der Sturmer a newspaper that used propaganda "to prepare the ground psychologically for political action and military aggression" (p. 155). This was such a challenging case because the court needed to find a direct, causal link between the activities of Streicher and the implementation of a policy that called for aggression and mass murder. Streicher was obsessed with his hatred for Jews and fanatically called for action against them. However, when Streicher was brought to trial he insisted that he only learned about the mass killings when he became a prisoner by the Allies. In October of 1946 the tribunal found Streicher guilty on the charge of crimes against humanity, concluding that the articles he had published for his newspaper called for the extermination of the Jews. The tribunal sentenced him to death by hanging.

The trial of Julius Streicher was so important due to the use of propaganda in the Nazi party that led to the help of political and military aggression which in the end led to mass murder. The trial was to prove a direct link between the activities of the Nazi propagandists and the implementation of a policy of aggression or mass murder. The newspaper names "Der Sturmer" provided ample amounts of evidence against Streicher's hatred for Jews and calls the action against them. This newspaper was in business for 22 years. In one of the articles he writes that the Jews in Russia will all have the same fate in the end; death. He said that all of these Jews must be exterminated and in a later article that these people have migrated to other countries because of the German hatred. Julius claimed in his defense that he learned these tactics from being imprisoned by the Allies and that these speeches and articles were to only "inform" the people of Germany, not to instruct them on what to think and believe.

The German military was forced to disassemble and every person in the Nazi party was to be prosecuted. The military was to be completely disarmed and dismilitarized. This included the abolition of the Wehrmacht, the Gestapo, the SS, the SA and all other organizations, schools, and clubs serving "to keep the military alive and military tradition in Germany." They also had the Allies agree upon convincing the German people that have suffered a total military defeat and that they cannot escape responsibility for what they have brought upon themselves. Also, the occupation authorities would work jointly to destroy the Nazi party and its affiliated and supervised organizations to dissolve all Nazi institutions. This was to make sure all these parties would not be revived in any way and to prevent all Nazi and militaristic activity or propaganda completely.

The trial of Julius Streicher was important, because it proved just how powerful the effects of propaganda can be. Streicher was the editor of Der Stürmer and, therefore, a key purveyor of Nazi propaganda. However, in order to deem Streicher guilty, prosecutors had to prove that there is “a direct, causal link between the activities of Nazi propagandists and the implementation of a policy of aggression and mass murder” (p. 155). Although Streicher attempted to evade responsibility--he claiming that he only learned of the mass killings once imprisoned by the Allies and that his newspaper sought only to “inform” the public--he was ultimately found guilty on the charges of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. This trial was gravely important as it set the precedent that propaganda is, indeed, a brutal force that bears serious implications and that it and its evil manipulators must be held responsible, accordingly.

During de-Nazification, the Allies sought to erase any Nazi associations from German society and to convince the German people that “they ha[d] suffered a total military defeat and that they [could not] escape responsibility for what they ha[d] brought upon themselves” (p. 146). Besides removing any Nazi information from Germany, the Allies also sought to install their own information into German society. However, it was imperative that “U.S.-disseminated information was not to appear like propaganda” (p. 150). In fact, not only was it the goal of the Allies to deliver propaganda that was factual and truthful (harkening back to Bernays’ idea of productive propaganda), it was clear that it was only productive (i.e. truthful) propaganda that would work: Directive No. 1 for Propaganda of Overt Allied Information Services stated that “It must be emphasized that this first stage of reeducation, which is a critical stage, will have the opposite effect to that intended, if it is permitted even to look like a propaganda campaign” (p. 150). I think it is certainly worth noting that de-Nazification--the process by which the remains of Nazi propaganda were removed--was, in fact, directed by controlled, Allied propaganda.

That is, the U.S. government wanted their troops to go into Germany with the mindset that they are not safe and the Germans should not be trusted. For example, the video showed that all of the negative aspects (Hitler, concentration camps, and Nazi propaganda) of Germany were now gone, but Germany was still the enemy country and no American soldier should be fooled because no American is safe there.

In my opinion, I think the origination of the Nazi party was an important aspect in the revival of Germany, and it was almost necessary to a certain extent. However, de-Nazification was even more crucial to bring back peace in Germany. After the war, the majority of German people were associated with the Nazi party in some way so the overall process of de-Nazificatioin was somewhat difficult. I feel as though taking Nazi Party members out of power was the most effective way to get them out of Germany.

De-Nazification was an Allied initiative to rid German and Austrian society, culture, press, economy, judiciary, and politics of any remnants of the National Socialist ideology (Nazism). Positions of power and influence of anyone who had been part of the Nazi party were removed. This took place after the end of the Second World War. The removal of the physical symbols of the Nazi regime, like the swastika, took place. For example, in 1957 the West German government re-issued World War II Iron Cross medals, and other decorations, without the swastika in the center. Top ranking Nazis, including: Goring, Hess, von Ribbentrop, Streicher, and Speer, were put on trial for war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials. Their crimes were publicized in order to bring justice to the German people. However, many of them were not even convicted of crimes.

Julius Streicher began his career as an elementary school teacher. Furthering his career, he undertook a post a teacher and administrator at a school in the Franconian city of Nuremberg. This region was very closely associated with Nazi activity. When World War I emerged, Streicher enlisted and served for the entire war. When Germany was defeated, Streicher was traumatized, which led him to committing radical political activity. In 1922, Streicher persuaded his personal followers to merge with the fledgling National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistic Deutsche Arbeiterpartei). In 1923, he established Der Strurmer (The Stormtrooper), an anti-Semitic newspaper. He also took part in Hitler’s “Beer Hall Putsch,” (attempt to overthrow the German government) the same year. Furthermore, he helped to organize the famous one-day boycott of Jewish businesses on April 1, 1933. Streicher is considered one of the Nazi party’s earliest members and was valued by Hitler as a protégé. Though, other leaders often viewed him as volatile. In May 1945, Streicher was captured by US forces, and convicted on the charge of crimes against humanity. This led to a trial of major war criminals held before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. He was hanged in Nuremberg on October 16, 1946.

De-Nazification began at the Yalta Conference (Feb. 1945) which divided Germany into four separate parts put into the hands of - U.S.A, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France. Then, at the Potsdam Conference in July they aimed to "disarm and demilitarize" Germany. This included shutting down organizations, schools and anything else that aimed to "keep the military tradition alive in Germany". Next the Allies had to remove party members who owned positions of influence. The goal was to destroy the Nazi party and all affiliated and supervised organizations; additionally that all Nazi institutions would be dissolved. Moreover, denazification also included renaming streets, parks and buildings that had Nazi associations (statues, monuments, etc.). Additionally the Allies included reeducation toward the Germans, exposing them to ideas and offering that they were never able to experience under the Nazis.

De-nazification was a necessary process that Germany had to undergo. If it wasn't for these actions, even things such as Nazi street signs would still be hanging throughout Germany. As we see in the photo on page 149, of a U.S. solider renaming Adolf-Hitler Street. Additionally the reeducation of Germans may have not occurred, causing them to learn nothing about cultural ideas - essentially leaving them the same knowledge as they had throughout the Nazi regime. So art and propaganda that was "degenerate" would never have been put on display as it was throughout the four zones during the de-Nazification period (this opened the doors to different political viewpoints [jazz and galleries were a staple in the U.S. zone]). Additionally if the occupation authorities didn't work to destroy the Nazi Party and all related organizations - the Nazi propaganda and culture would still have been prominent in Germany in this period of time.

Denazification is definitely an act that was purposeful and needed. The program revolves around peace and rebuilding the community. It was a step of prosecuting propagandists and getting rid of antisemitism. On page 150 their is an image that shows a wagon and inside it appears to be items that involve itself with the Nazi Party. It's put the history of denazification to perspective that they were indeed allies and there to take matters into their own hands. "Denazification also entailed renaming streets, parks, and buildings that had Nazi or militaristic associations; removing monuments, statues, signs, and emblems linked to Nazism (p.149)."

During denazification, efforts were made by the Allies to remove active members of the former Nazi Party from official public office and influential positions in Germany after World War II. Denazification was carried out on the basis of questionnaires about activities during the period of Nazi rule that the suspects had to fill out. The results were diverse policies serving divergent goals. At first, denazification had important consequences for those who were not rehabilitated were not appointed to important offices or granted specific licenses. To consolidate the policies, five categories were established in 1946 which included major offenders, offenders, lesser offenders, followers and persons exonerated. As political conditions and political needs changed, enforcement was transferred to the Germans themselves.

While he claimed to be unaware of the mass killings of Jews, his antipathy for them was well documented during a time where there was not an open marketplace of ideas. He was therefore found an accessory to the heinous crimes even though a causal link was not established. The deep philosophical question of whether or not speech is as criminal as actual murder is raised, but ultimately, and most importantly the court deemed it so.

De-Nazification involved re-educating the German public as to their total military defeat and varying levels of culpability based on five categories of Nazi Party membership. The bulk of individuals were class 5, being the least culpable and were exonerated. This made up about 75% of the 836,000 prosecuted.

The second highest majority at 503,360 were fined, and the smallest, and most egregious offenders faced time in work camps between 1-5 years. All Nazi military and organizations (clubs, schools) were eliminated, as well as their weapons, be it traditional or propaganda related. Those who resisted the de-nazification could not hold office or work in media. Those activists who bent the ear of the youth were immediately let go. The removal of Nazi related iconography and street signs was huge in eliminating the Nazi Germany image. Some destroying was more impassioned, such as blowing up of swastikas and melting printing plates for Mein Kampf. The actual printing presses were also replaced with U.S. ones where information laden pieces educated the German public apart from propaganda. Film and radio were used to culturally enrich and educate. The addition of new textbooks, educators, and facilities were supplied as the German people attempted to rebuild their lives. Books were destroyed as well but in as non-obtrusive a manner as possible.

The case brought against him included the statement that propaganda was "one of the strongest weapons of the conspirators who from the outset...appreciated the urgency of the task of inculcating the German masses with the National Socialist principles and ideology," (pg. 154).While Streicher claimed that he was seeking only to spread information and that he was unaware of the mass killings before his capture by the Allies, he was still found guilty for crimes against humanity. This trial was important because it establishes the use of propaganda as a weapon of warfare in this instance, and it shows the gravity of how it can result in heinous crimes.

It was noted in the chapter that the removal of Nazi party members from position of influence was a difficult but crucial task, because there was an estimated ten to thirteen million Germans who had been affiliated with the party. I think that this speaks to just how important de-Nazification was, because the Nazi party was so engrained in German society that had de-Nazification not occurred, German citizens could have continued to spread hate and violence.
