My favourite experience is the curriculum course with the all the projects we did. The 1 I liked the most was making homemade play dough because it got me to focus on my fine motor skills and get the measurements correctly.

The most challenging part for me was working with very short staff, there are many kids that attend daycare and with 2-3 staff is challenging. Another thing that is challenging leaving for medical and missing out on class work and the daycare.

~Shania

My favourite things about my experience in this semester are the memories of having work to complete, it brought back memories of being in high school as I loved every part of high school. All the work we had to do before deadline, all the things we learned about, and putting to use what we learned. I also used what I learned with my own toddler at home, learning more about the domains of development.

There are 2 things that were very challenging for me. I’ve never sewed or crocheted in my life before we started college so it was all very new to me. I would get a little frustrated when I couldn’t sew or crochet it right so I’d ask for help from our instructor. Although it was challenging, I was also excited to be given the opportunity to learn to sew and crochet so I can do those for my own family as well.

~Lisa Parker :)

I enjoy learning about things about what I never would’ve thought of; my workplace has helped me grow professionally and personally, I enjoy being a part of their learning and connecting with them, supporting their development even though there are challenges like behaviour management, busy routines and team working; moments like these help me with my patience, confidence and problem-solving skills. Serving others; practicing qanuqtuurniq, I am learning how to balance my life at school, workplace and home. I love being a part of their learning, their crafts and everything else. I watch them master their routines, solve problems, explore new things. I am also very thankful for my coworkers, they have been there through every step of the way, not once have they left me out. We have shared ideas and communicated very good, i feel very supported at both school and work. Coming from a home where I cared for the young and old, I feel like it’s what I do best, I’m glad to do this for a living.

For my challenges, it’s managing different behaviours at the same time while the other children are needing help, some have bigger emotions. It’s also challenging when we need to quickly get things done such as brushing their teeth, changing their diapers but they aren’t moving at our pace. Sometimes communicating with coworkers on busy days when our expectations aren’t always the same, some days are tiring physically and emotionally. I am still learning to handle my emotions from outside of work, I’ve had to take 2 mental health days off since I started working in September. I am still very patient and professional at school and work most days.

-Angel A

My favourite thing about this program is we work as a team, we all learn and teach from each other. One person is always there for you to help, everyone is engaged on what we need to do. We encourage everyone to stay at class and go to work. We get to teach the children on what we learn from this program.

Verna K.

My favourite thing about this ECE program is that it is located in my hometown (I didn’t have to move out for this learning experience)

I love that we all work as a team and learn from one another.

The most challenging for me is lunch time. Sometimes its difficult for me as a single mother and I have to stay at the Daycare Centre during lunch and I am not home to feed MY child before he attends his afternoon class at school, other days are good as my babysitter is the one bringing my child to school.

janaya

My favourite experience this semester is learning about the domains because I was able to challenge myself. I was able to get to know and understand how the children work around themselves, like what are they ways they use to communicate with their teachers and classmates. I was able to get to know the challenges of some children.

The most challenging thing for me is when there is no work communication, and there is chaos going on in the daycare. But on days like this we all lean on each other and that is a good thing because we work together as a team and get the work done.

-Hillary

My favourite experience is surusilaalirinnirmik ilinnianiq because it gives me time to learn more sewing other projects, I have learned how to sew more stuff other then pualuk (mitts) I learned how to sew an owl, slippers(booties), felt book, an polar bear for a puppet..

Most challenging one is thinking what to write on padlets, having to think of what to do when you’re not caught up from anything from being on medical or being sick (or one of our children are sick) or even when you have to go back to work from being short staff.. I still have some art work I need to do here in college from not being here from those times…

-krisy

My favourite experience of this half course is our project we did, especially when we started learning how to start sewing. I enjoy sewing and learning our culture. Learning and listening to elders of the past of what they did without cell phone or internet. They did a lot of walking and moving around. Lots of things getting done. I learnt how to use my patience for the things we need done.

The most challenging part is learning how to crochet, i need to learn how to be patience with that, and being short staffed at work, needing to stay at work and miss school, had to ask my colleagues what i missed and try catch up.

Getting my colleagues to learn how to communicate with each other. Being there for each other. Helping out.

Holly Kayuryuk

My favourite things that I’ve learn is about the children’s development domains and how important it is, that a routine is needed for basic lifestyles in the future, also to be patient, especially with many different children. My other favourite thing that I’ve learned is how to light a qulliq, our elders coming into our class and how they got through with their life, how they lived.

The most challenging things are

Living life at home with a toddler while being busy at work with a lot of responsibilities at work and teaching them, while my child is at home with no routines. This work also taught and opened my eyes in many ways that it is important for children to have routines. It gets challenging because my child requires time with me, sometimes I get tired when I get home from work, but this opened my eyes so I’m glad to have taken this opportunity.

what’s also challenging is that some children have different needs and one after another child comes to me for different things but I just ask for help when more than 2 children come tome for my help.

Hattie
