The term “Inuit” means “the people” in the Inuktitut language.

Inuit communities are located in very special places dominated by harsh climate and stark landscapes shaping their traditions and the way they live. Specifically in the Arctic, in the northwest territories, Labrador and Quebec in Canada.

They live in the tundra. A difficult place to live because the climate is very cold, there are not many animals to feed people and they are also a few building materials. Inuits live in igloos during the large part of the year, the cold part. When the snow melted, they live in huts made of animal skins.

In the tundra most of the plants cannot grow. They hunt to get feed. The traditional diet of the Inuit people consist of fishes, whales, seals, polar bears and birds. Their diet is high in protein and very high in fat.

Art please in important role for Inuit society, most of their sculptures show activities they made every day like fishing or hunting. Before they were carved from ivory and bone but actually they work on soft stones like soapstone and serpentinite.

The traditional Inuit clothes are made from animal skins sewn together using needles made from animal bones. The anorak is the traditional name of coat for mam and amouti for a woman.

Do you know what a qamutik is?
It’s a sled and it could be made of wood, animals bones, frozen fish and even baleen from a whale. The sled dog has a very important role for transportation over snow or ice. How does this work in your culture? How they move from one place to another?

Are they known as Eskimos too?
Yes, some people know them as Eskimos but it’s wrong to call them like that because the Inuit people find this term offensive. What’s the name of your favorite culture? How the people call them?

Variety is the spice of life

knowing other cultures provides information and points of view of the world that maybe in my daily context I couldn’t acquire, and that allows me to make decisions from a wider point of view which could lead to better outcomes; on the other hand, and specifically in my case in which I’m studying to be a physician, knowing and interacting with other cultures let me recognize the context in which they develop, something that is fundamental in recognizing the process of health and disease, and also because knowing that kind of information can make me take better decisions on the treatment of my patients.

When I was a kid my family always tried to teach me about a lot of cultures. They love to travel and immerse themselves in the countries they visit. Since I started traveling I have always wanted to learn about northern cultures. They have something interesting that makes me feel curious about it. First because there are some stories that say they were the first human beings that came to our continent. Also because they had to survive and grow their civilizations in very difficult conditions and the main reason it's because they have a very different lifestyle compared with ours, all of that because of their tough climate conditions.

The ecosystem is the main factor that shapes a civilization's growth. For that reason the Inuit people have a very different way of life than we do, whoever I think all of the human civilizations and cultures have similarities. Firstable one of the most important things for them are their families. Family plays an important role in their society, like in ours. Also the love for the planet earth and all the animals that live here. I know some people don't give the value that they have but some of us do, like me. So if we look closer as I said there are a lot of similarities like these in the different cultures all around the world.
