The Great Depression was the most effective economic decline in U.S. history. It began in 1929 when the stock market crashed in October of that year. The 1930 Hawley-Smoot Tariff -raised average tariff rates to about 60%- caused America’s international trading partners to raise the rates on US-made goods. This caused the international trade rate to decrease and a further decline in global economies. The Great Depression caused millions of people to lose jobs. Those who were able to keep their job frequently experienced extreme pay cuts of 1/3 or more. Many people could no longer afford their typical necessities, such as food.
