Alberto Sampaio Museum

The loudel is one of the most emblematic pieces of the Alberto Sampaio Museum. It is said to have been worn by Dom João I in the Battle of Aljubarrota, on August 14, 1385, and offered by the monarch to Santa Maria da Oliveira, as a sign of gratitude for the victory achieved in that royal battle.

It is a military garment, consisting of a series of layers of linen quilted with wool stuffing and would have been externally covered with green wool fabric and embroidered with silk thread and gold. According to Fernão Lopes, it was sown with wheels of branches and shields of St. George. Today, only remains of the coat of arms of Dom João I are visible, namely the four points of the cross of Avis.

It was a light garment, which allowed for great mobility, and was worn over the chain mail. Loose pieces of armor could be worn on top.

Although it was a garment that protected the body (from the armor itself and from enemy blows), the loudel also served to identify the wearer. In Aljubarrota, according to Maria Emília Amaral Teixeira, the Portuguese wore loudels with the shield of St. George, their patron saint, and the Castilians wore loudels with the shield of St. James. Fernão Lopes says that after the battle won by the Portuguese, the Castilians fled and turned their loudsails inside out so as not to be identified. Also, during the meeting between Dom João I and the Duke of Lencastre, Fernão Lopes says that the king "...gave to all those who were with him in the coat, which could have been up to five hundred spears, white phaeton laurels with St. George crosses...".

It is one of the rarest 14th century military garments in the world. From this period, another is known to have belonged to the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III of England and uncle of Dona Filipa de Lencastre, the wife of Dom João I.

The Portuguese consider it a relic and it was classified as a National Treasure in 2006, by Decree no. 19/2006, of July 18, and the respective rectification declaration no. 62/2006, of September 15.
