For example, on page 331 it says Seasickness, seems to be the Effect of Agitation. The smoke of Seacoal, the Smell of the stagnant putrid Water... That shows exactly how he was feeling by showing us his viewpoint of the journey.

#11 and 12

Primary Sources

The author includes quotes from John Adams dairy because when he wrote those sentences, that is how he was really feeling at that time in history and that helps us visualize what was really happening in the past because he was really there. The seasickness he felt was written down in his diary. When he says "The smoke of seacoal, the Smell of stagnant putrid water, the odor of the Ship where sailors sleep..." that helps us see that the sickness he was feeling was more than one thing. The author includes quotes because John Adams was there at that point in history.

In the picture below , you can tell that in was hard to sail in this weather and the author wanted someone who was there to experience it. It also makes the book more believable .

Cause and Effect
Johnny Adams thought it was a cannon fire from the British frigates. It turned out that the ship was struck by lightning. The text states,"C-R-R-AAACK!...Was that cannon fire? Had the British frigate overtaken them? Would the firing continue until they surrendered? Or would the Boston fight until it sank between the waves? In truth, there were no cannons at work. "The ship has been struck by lightning!" an officer told them."

Visual Elements

The illustrations in the book add meaning to the story and communicate the tone by showing different viewpoints of the story. For example, on page 332, it shows Captain Tucker's point of view from his telescope. To contrast so, on page 330, it shows us the ship and it's harsh surroundings from third point of view. Each separate image displays the same story in a different way to help us see how the story's tone is harsh and brutal.
