Justified or Unjustified Beliefs (Values) by Jovelyn delos Santos

There are few questions that have to be answered during this lesson: (1) How did you develop the ability to ‘morally navigate’ the world? (2) What is (/should be) the role of empathy in the construction of our moral framework? You can add research links, or images in your response

This moral navigation emerged through a combination of personal experiences, cultural background, and academic learning. A childhood between the diverse environments of Turkey and Kosovo taught me different ethical frameworks; thus, one more time I realized that morality could be relative but at the same time universal.

What is consider to be moral or immoral has mostly been shaped by my culture and societal norms in my country of origin. A larger more direct impact is due to beliefs of my own parents, including my own religion since I am a muslim. I mostly developed my moral compass through percieving actions performed by others and how those affected their surroundings. There are set expectations by my own religion and parents which do to some extent limit me from anything that is considered a wrongdoing such as stealing, or taking substances such as alcohol or drugs.

Empathy should be a tool that helps us connect with people in order to find out what causes injustice between various cultures, societies, or religions through laws or any societal norm hindering us from achieving any sort of moral framework. Empathy can allow us to make decisions on behalf of others by grasping the emotions of others and gaining a sense of understanding based on their situation or context. With that being said, empathy helps us form a collective reasoning of what morality should be based on everyone's prior experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Since empathy brings us closer to the thoughts and feelings of other individuals, it should be at the heart of our moral conception and, therefore, guide moral decisions. It strengthens the bonds between individuals and arouses acts of selflessness, thus leading to cooperation and mutual aid. In regard to moral issues, the development of empathy boosts compassion and respect; from this, there is achieved an equal society-even though one must sometimes balance feelings of empathy with reason to avoid prejudices.
