Human-centered design supports developing the intervention at the community level. This design starts with development at the community level, not at the concept level. Starting at the community level forces the design to be centered around the affected population without postulating theories that "could" work. It is an iterative process that plans, implements, verifies and adjusts as needed to ensure effectiveness.

Methods that can be deployed to support human-centered design are using a multidisciplinary team approach, being empathetic, and shifting the mindest of the implementers to understand how those affected feel and think.

Human-centered design is about centering lived experience and practicing cultural humility when collaborating with the population served. This is something I experience as an eating disorder specialist with intensive training but no history of an eating disorder. Academic knowledge can only inform so much, and the needs of the community must be put at the forefront. HCD also allows for changes to be made along the way (iterative process). Qualitative data is important in this context in order to have an in-depth understanding of the issue and community.
