Looking for resources and contacts for anyone who applies these principles and doesn't only see behaviors. My 16yo kiddo has been trapped at the hospital for months and they won't do anything about the "bottom of the iceburg" and their focus on the top of the iceburg (behaviors) are keeping my child from moving to any other facility or getting any actual treatment.

I witnessed the power of relationship yesterday with my son's dentist. My son hasn't been able to sit in the chair and we would go in and visit to build the relationship and foster trust. Yesterday my son sat in the chair and allowed the dentist to look in his mouth, and the assistant to polish his teeth. There was no force, it was mutual. Because of that we are able to look towards other dental health goals, and work together to get there.

Partnering with parent/families to build on strengths of the child has always been my approach. Trying to balance the needs of a child who comes in to school already stressed, and the needs of the classroom/school as a whole can be difficult. I try to support the teachers as well as the parents who already feel at wits end. We try to keep our eye on the goal of helping children succeed.

I've been reading Chris Emdin's work (For White Folks Who Teach in the 'Hood, Ratchetdemic), and that idea of trauma-RESPONSIVE practice (that bodies remember bad experiences, and that we can help them to learn new experiences through relationships) is really cool. Emdin's work in reality pedagogy promotes a lot of really cool relational strategies in the classroom (co-generative dialogues, co-teaching, cosmopolitanism, etc.) that are some practical applications... I'd love to see these connections made more explicit

I'm curious about how this approach works with anxiety. I was told by a psychologist working with my kiddo that every time I allowed my child to avoid something due to anxiety, the "anxiety monster gets fed and grows". It feels so cruel of me to ignore my child's cries or "force" them to do things that terrify them, and that relational disconnect doesn't seem like it would help them overcome their anxiety, but it would build trauma response and distrust of me.

I see and agree with the ideal and it is my preferred practice but as a teacher who has had to prioritize safety and physical wellbeing of my students this year this seems completely unobtainable! Almost every day a member of my team is out without a substitute and my district removed an para position. When Dr Delahooke mentioned self-care I just had to laugh... Then to see all the negative comments about schools and teachers - it is heartbreaking.

Educating parents who don't have access

I am struck by how exclusive the group who has access to this information is, interested educators, counselors and knowledgeable parents. Private therapists that use a child centered approach is not accessible to those without means or excellent insurance as well as schedules aren't always conducive to some families schedules or lack of transportation. I work with many families who would be considered to be marginalized. These parents have their own cultural norms/biases and don't always feel they can advocate for their child. I try my best to introduce the concept of the underlying reason for behaviors, but it is more than I am able to do with my limited time. I wonder if specifically inviting organizations such as Open Doers for Multicultural Families, The ARK, REWA, Asian Counseling Services and medical clinics that serve the population may be an avenue.
