My son hasn't been able to sit in the chair and we would go in and visit to build the relationship and foster trust. Yesterday my son sat in the chair and allowed the dentist to look in his mouth, and the assistant to polish his teeth. There was no force, it was mutual. Private therapists that use a child centered approach is not accessible to those without means or excellent insurance as well as schedules aren't always conducive to some families schedules or lack of transportation. I work with many families who would be considered to be marginalized. These parents have their own cultural norms/biases and don't always feel they can advocate for their child. I try my best to introduce the concept of the underlying reason for behaviors, but it is more than I am able to do with my limited time.
