Every organism, or living thing, comprises structures called cells. The cell is the smallest unit with the basic properties of life. Some tiny organisms, such as bacteria and yeast, comprise only one cell. Large plants and animals have many billions of cells. Human beings are made up of over 75 trillion cells. The study of cells is a branch of biology.

Although plant and animal cells have many of the same organelles, there are some notable differences. Plant and animal cells both have a cell membrane, but besides a cell membrane, a plant cell also has a cell wall. The cell wall gives the plant cell structure. Plant cells also contain chloroplasts, green organelles that do photosynthesis. Animal cells do not have chloroplast because they do not do photosynthesis.
