I have several concerns. The only relief students get right now from constant exposure to social media is during the six hours they are at school. During the past year, Team 7-2 had several episodes of cyber bullying and cruelty involving cell phones. These episodes occurred outside of school. When the cell phones are in the classroom, I am afraid of the same sort of behavior- constant albeit silent contact and distraction. In addition, a cell phone screen is much more difficult to monitor than a chromebook screen. And, with our population of students, there are students who don't have phones because they can't afford them. Why single these kids out in school where we are trying to create a level playing field?

1. I don't know of any instructional purpose for cell phones, considering all students have personal Chromebooks.
2. None of the RJHS students will have been permitted to use them at school, so it wouldn't be difficult to keep it that way.
3. I acknowledge that I've never taught in a school where students were permitted to carry or use phones, so I only have this side of the experience; however, I have not heard ringing (ha, see what I did there?) endorsements from educators who have/do.

1. I am concerned that cell phones will become one more (huge) distraction from learning.
2. I worry about the impact on social drama in the building. It's always mental health staff and administrators that end up dealing with the messes made in the digital world outside of school, but even as a classroom teacher I catch wind of how messy and time consuming it all is. I imagine that inviting cell phones into student hands during the school day would exacerbate this kind of activity.
3. I wonder if kids will use recording features to cheat.
4. About two years ago there was a student on my team who would record teachers and students from his pocket and use the recording to send mean Snap Chats to his friends. I would hate to see more of this kind of behavior.
5. In general I worry about the addictive nature of devices, particularly smart phones. I wonder how our decisions around use as a school community can hurt or help the situation.

What would a "no phones" policy look like? Phones must be left in lockers all day? They can be carried but never taken out? They can be carried but only used in designated areas?
4. What would allowing them mean? Free use every minute of the day? Can students freely make calls? Text whenever they want? Listen to music whenever they see fit? Choose to bypass the Chromebook and use the phone to find information?
5. If the decision to allow cell phones is made, will adults who enforce a "no phones" policy in their classroom/space be supported when students violate these rules?

When I shadowed at the NGA, I spent the day with an awesome young lady. We discussed cell phone use, and she told me that when she's in a classroom where the teacher doesn't allow phone use, she likes it better when the expectation is just to keep it concealed. She thinks classroom systems where all students must "turn over" their phones to a box or something similar at the start of class is over the top, and sends the message that she and her peers are not trust worthy. Her opinion was that only kids who have violated the classroom expectations should loose their phones at the start of class.
