1. Student Background Surveys: This is normally administered at the beginning of the school year or term, but also can be used at the beginning of a unit. This type of survey includes questions about students academic interests, personal interests, dreams, fears, family members, etc.

2. Individual Student Learning Goals: This is where a student takes teacher identified learning goals and connects them with their own experiences and interests.

3. Commenting on Student Achievements or Areas of Importance: This is a strategy that can be used after you have learned about your students background. This is where you can make comments on any successes that students have had recently. You can also touch on any changes that may be happening in the students life, ie. moving, weddings, etc.

Using Technology to Enhance

1. Technology could be used to enhance student background surveys by creating a poll. This could help you group the students by interests easier, since the poll could be online.

2. When working toward their learning goal, students can create an online journal. This could be done in Google Drive and be shared with the teacher. These journals can be a place where students reflect on their progress towards their learning goal. You could even extend these journals to others in the class that similar learning goals. They could comment on peers and give feedback on other ways they could make progress towards their goals.

3. In order to comment on students achievements, you could use an online tool. One that I have seen a lot is Edmodo, which is basically like Facebook, but meant for school. Here students could post about their achievements and as the teacher you could easily communicate about these achievements with each student.

Implementation Tips

In order to implement all three of these strategies, the teacher would need to do a little setting up. Once the class Edmodo is set up and all students have been added, all strategies could be posted to that site.

Another implementation tip for these strategies is to allow time for students to complete them throughout the day. If there is a few minutes each day that students could complete their reflective journal or comment on Edmodo, it will make communication much easier.
