“And Willy—if it’s a warm Sunday We’ll drive in the country. And we’ll open the windshield, and take lunch” (Miller 7)

This is Linda trying to think to the future to make Willy feel better. Not only this but to snap Willy out of his negative thoughts so that he can feel better about himself. She is also trying to make him feel better and trying to switch the topic off of Willy worrying about Biff and Happy because it seems that Linda doesn’t like when he talks to them in a disrespectful way. Linda just wants Willy to be happy and it seems like if she can do that she will be happy as well.

“If old man Wagner was alive I’d be in charge of New York now!” (Miller 4).

Willy is comparing himself to someone that is more successful than him and talks that if this Wagner character was still alive his life would be so much better because of him. Instead of Willy dealing with his own situation he keeps talking about excuses and how this and that should have made him more successful when he is the person that should be making change in his own life to make it better.

Because I don’t want the girl, and, still, I take it and —I love it!” (Miller 14).

Happy is talking about how he’s gotten with so many women and how he hates himself for it. However, when he’s in the moment he always seems to love it even though he knows he’ll regret it later.

“Charley: Don’t get insulted.
Willy: Don’t insult me” (29)

Charley is just trying to help out Willy, but Willy continues to completely take it the wrong way. He feels that Charley is also just making insults towards Willy when in reality he is just trying to help because he feels bad for the state that Willy is in. This shows Willy just making things worse for himself instead of listening to someone who wants to help.

“Charley: Why must everybody like you? Who liked J. P. Morgan?” (Miller 75).

Charley is explaining to Willy a way of happiness that he should try out. Charley hates seeing Willy fail so much and put everything on himself. This relates to harmony because Willy needs to learn to walk away from problems or around the rocks like water.

“I realized what a ridiculous lie my whole life has been. We’ve been talking in a dream for fifteen years. I was a shipping clerk” (81).

This relates to the TED talk of there’s more to life than happiness. This is when the TED talk talks about how people become more depressed when they tell stories from the passed from when they were happy and then it all of the sudden went bad. This is a behavior to avoid to become happy because it is making Biff feel worse and like his entire life just doesn’t have meaning what so ever.

“I am known” (100).

This is Willy saying that he is known and that he does belong, but as readers we know that this isn’t necessarily true. He is lying to himself because he is trying to convince himself that he is known and has a purpose. In this sense it seems that this is making it worse for himself because a lot of his life is based off of lies and it seems the delusions that he is having are making him realize the truth and the truth is what is tearing him apart.

“It’s the only dream you can have—to come out number-one man” (111).

Especially for the Lomans this is a behavior that needs to be avoided for happiness. It seems just like Willy, Happy is avoiding what his true strength and happiness is, just to try to become the number one man that isn’t possible for them. It seems for Happy this is sports marketing and for Willy it was building things. They gave up on what made them happy to try and obtain something that they can’t because they don’t enjoy doing it.
